Usually only if they are offering an in-house periop/residency program which redies you to work in their OR. The other route you can take is enrolling in a Periop program at a university. That route is time consuming and pricey but it will probably get you where you want to be.

are you saying i have to enrol in a class?

That depends on the hospital. Some offer a periop course to new hires. My orientation was the AORN periop 101 program, with six months of supervision followed by three months solo but with a resource person covering all new nurses. If the hospital doesn't offer such a course, you may need to take it on your own.

I'm not saying you have to, I'm saying it will increase your chances of being hired into an OR. I don't know of any hospitals that will hire an inexperienced OR nurse unless they themselves are offering the program or you've already done a Periop program somewhere else.

As a manager of a fast paced busy OR I prefer fresh people that I can teach our ways to. I hate retraining people withbad habits from other ORs and some training programs thatt seem to breed nurses that are lazy an think they are better than the rest of the team. I try to teach true team work, my RN staff and even the crna staff will mop and take out trash when we are turning over. My primary qualification is that your energetic and ready /willing to learn. Of the last 10 people I have hired only one had experience. Just keep applying and when you interview be upbeat. Try internal transfer to the OR too but go talk to the OR manager first.

Thanks for the guidance Argo;)... I am interested in a Periop Program as well. I am hoping that something opens up very soon here in Philadelphia. In the meantime, I am currently working as a new grad Charge Nurse RN - BSN @ a SNF on nights...:)

I worked at an ASC for 2 years prior. I got the basics of sterile technique down, but only knew a few procedures. I think I've adapted well. Might try an ASC if you can't get on at a hospital. They are usually fairly specialized and for that reason don't mind hiring new grads.

Hey Argo, are you still in SA? Im in Dallas in my first semester of nursing school and wanna get into the OR ASAP after graduation. Any advice? Ya'll usually have openings?
