Opportunity to review tests in nursing school

We never get to see our tests after we take them. All we get is a grade that's posted. It's so frustrating because you never know which questions you missed and which you got right. It makes it really hard to study for finals because you're going into the finals with the same misconceptions you had when you took the unit test during the semester. Are all nursing schools like this, or is it just mine?

Oh my! I don't know if I am right about this or not, but I have been under the impression that you have a RIGHT to look at your test w/correct answers if for no other reason that to ensure it was scored accurately. At my school we get our tests back and have the opportunity to ask the instructors about any questions on the test that we missed. We've also been told that we have a right to look at past tests whenever we want to, I might actually request to do this before the final so I can remind myself what I need to focus on.

I would not want to just get a score after a test, I would definitely want to know what misconceptions I had so that I could have an opportunity to correct them.

Have you directly asked to see your tests? I would give it a shot, then if they refused, I'd clarify the school policy on that.

In the earlier courses, Fundamentals and such, we always had time to go over the tests as a class whenever they were ready to be returned. We could LOOK at the tests, to go over the questions, but only keep our Scantron (automated grading printout that doesn't show questions, just grade). Tests are always returned.

As time went on, however, there was less and less time during class to devote to arguing (oh, I mean discussing ;) )the tests. So, we were given the opportunity of making individual appointments with instructor to go over them. Thing is, by the time most people could GET an appointment, it was a matter of minutes before the next test was due to be given :uhoh21:

Mostly, this last semester, we just ask as a class for clarification on the questions that most of us may have missed (instructor knows the breakdown of percentages right and wrong on any test because of the Scantron grading).

If you're really concerned, just make an appointment to go over test so you can ask --for educational reasons!--why one answer is preferable to another.

Good luck!

Yes, we got to review the tests right after we all took them, with the instructors present to argue ummm I mean discuss why the answer is right or wrong (on our own time). In fact, if I could fight hard for an answer and then back it up with notes or readings, then we could all get the extra point for it. It was a war after those tests!!

We would takes the tests from 3-5pm, and then have review at 5:30 until people were satisified with their answers. Then, we have one week to meet with our advisor if we want to go over them again in provate. I can't imagine not knowing what answers I got wrong! It's just like reviewing the rational in the back of the NCLEX books. We can learn just as much from the wrong answers as the right ones. I mean, it really matters.

Is there any way you can talk with your advisor about this?

Hehe! I just re-read your post an saw that we said the same thing!

:) I have found, throughout the last few years, a whole LOTTA "arguing, I mean discussing" situations, as I'm sure you have too!

we are allowed to go look at the answer key right after taking the test. We just have to remember our answers.

Towards the end of the semester I heard they are going to have the keys to all the tests we've taken to use in order to study for the final.

This is the final semester and the first one they've done that. Usually we got to look right after the test and then they tell us the tests all get shredded. (Our Scantron's go in a file somewhere)

Wow! Our instructors keep a binder for us of all our tests and quizzes so we can review them, but only in the lab. We can not remove them from that room. Then 90 days after we finish the class they all get shredded.

we only get to review our tests if we make below a 78 on the test. and finals are never reviewed.

We do not get our tests handed back. We have to make an appt to go in and review our tests if we want to see them otherwise grades are posted on the instructors' office doors. We do have the option for arguement if one choses to come in and look at their test. I don't know if they do it all this way for time's sake or what, but that's my :twocents: .
