Opioid Addiction and The Alex Murdaugh Case

Updated:   Published

For any of you who are following this case, what factor do you think opioid addiction played into this. Alex Murdaugh had a 20-year habit of serious opioid use. His life spiraled down a disastrous downward slope into total destruction.

The Murdaugh trial is twisted true crime at its peak

GUILTY AS CHARGED!!!

Not sure how much opioids had to do with the pathology of narcissism that appears to be evident in this family.  Allowing and enabling their teenager to drink to the point where he had become an alcoholic who clearly needed an intervention.  According to most people in their town that family has a history of being above the law and unfortunately it cost good people their lives (RIP Mallory, and possibly Gloria and Stephen).   Agree with the blood splatter theory NICU but they did find blood splatter on at least one of his shirts, not sure about his person.

Seeing Mr. Murdaugh towards the end of the trial is a stark contrast to the way he is pictured just a couple years ago.  Besides the blank expression he is hardly recognizable from his lawyer days.

I'm not one of those people who like to see people fall, I think for me it was the culmination of coincidences that first got me intrigued.

Interesting thread tho...

Life without parole. Judge Newman was awesome. His remarks were spot on!

Indeed. I really appreciated his statement that maybe Murdaugh didn't kill his wife and son but the jury believes that the monster he becomes with the opiates did. (Paraphrased)

This family has long conducted their lives adjacent to the local law but not really accountable to it because of their status and wealth.  That generational privilege and lack of accountability can have really toxic outcomes... as this case may well have demonstrated.

I also thought Judge Newman was very eloquent when he discussed the pressures that Alex was under that day. He had been confronted about embezzling money from clients. He had lost his job at the law firm. He was under extreme psychological pressure on that day. Yet, Alex stated an open court that it was just another day of enjoying his family.
