Hello Nurses,

I am not a nurse, but I do have a question for all of you skilled professionals out there.......

If you could change anything about the current style IV poles, what would it be?

I appreciate any help you could give me!

Thanks:)

I think it should be easy to make them scope up and down. Too many are not dependable and will not maintain position. Also, I think they should be able to be easily broken down where you can attach it to the bed, if needed.

This is just one of those nusiance issues that would take more time and money to fix than to put up with, alas. Biggest problem I had with them from personal experience was the darn thing kept trying to tip over, espescially on carpets, bumps, etc. Keeping the base clean and well greased would solve that, but......who's the hospital gonna pay to do that when there's a million and one other more pressing problems to worry about?

Telescoping would be a neat feature, however, most infuser pumps come right off and you can slide them up/down anyways. A hook to hang drainage bags down low, frees up the patients other hand (2 liters of pee gets real heavy real quick). Oh yeah, and an invisible base so you don't stub yer poor TOES on the thing because you was dumb enough to walk around barefoot (and no one told you better)! Don't ask me how I know all this.....:chuckle

If I could change our IV poles, they would ALL have wheels that don't get stuck and pull the pole everywhere but where you're actually trying to go. Where I work, we have IV poles that have those cheap plastic wheels; and one time I was taking my patient to CAT scan and the wheels suddenly got stuck and the pole fell; and to make things worse, the IV pump locked up and stopped working; and I had levophed going and my patients BP started to drop immediately. Very scary situation. Now, before I go anywhere with my patients, I make sure I have a good rolling pole and extra syringes incase my IV pumps decide to stop working.

I'm with moonepie on the wheel issue, and Tom about the lower hook (brilliant idea I'd never thought of myself!). We have portable poles with three, four and five wheels, and the more wheels the more stable it is, provided they all work.

I have a few ideas about IV pump CLAMPS, if anyone is interested?
