Per diem, a lil nervous

I guess this is just a "rant" post, so to speak, or a request for encouragement... anyway, I am picking up shifts (per diem) in an OR, where I did 5 orientation shifts . That was 2 months ago, and I agreed to do pick up some shifts this summer. I guess I am lil nervous about being on my own in a new facility, with new people, new routine. I guess what I am asking is, what should I focus on.... so I make sure I get things right.... I am also fairly new to the OR, I did full time for a year at a level 1 trauma center, so I am competent, but it helps to hear it from other veteran folks...I will be in general surgery only... so thats good...

Advice, encouragement?

I think based on the fact that you have a year at another facility,especially a level one trauma center, is good. It can be scary going to a new place. I just gave notice at my hospital and am not looking foward to the whole reorienting thing again. Oh well, just have to do my best. Good luck to you!

Make a list of questions that you need answers to, such as how to order labs, how to order blood, etc. Then find out the answers as soon as possible.

Focus on communiication with colleagues you feel you can trust to give you good information. Know the policies and procedures of your facility. You will be the rn of record--don't forget in that you stand alone.
