I know there are hospital's that have a cut off age for call....can you tell me about your hospital. I am interested in knowing where any of these hospital's might be. Thanks

My facility does not put an age limit on it--it is seen as "age discrimination" by the folks in HR. However, nurses with 25 or more yrs seniority/taking call in the dept are exempt from monthly call requirements, but still have to sign up for holiday call in rotation (though they do get 1st choice as they are most senior). Its a courtesy after 25 yrs of service, not an age thing. To keep it legal.

Interesting, that too is a "discrimination" initself...thanks for the reply..I have heard this before..

Not taking call after 25 years is a benefit not discrimination since there is no age attached to it. This means you could be 43 and not have to take call since you started at 18 or 43 and have to take call since you just started. Not pulling call is just like increasing the number of vacation days you get the longer you are at a facility.

Well I am 66 and still on the call rotation 1 time a week and about every 8th weekend. I usuall do not have to stay over and occasionally I give up 1 of the weekend days. But I am part time and that makes a difference. I do not know of any hospitals in my area that have no call after a certain age.

Where are you... thanks

I've worked at one facility that made an exemption based off 20 years of service to the Hospital chain. I currently work in a facility that has only been in existence for 4.5 years, and we haven't encountered the issue yet. If someone is "too old" to take call they must either be PRN, part-time, or take full call as anyone else.

At one hospital that I worked at had a cool thing that after the age of 55 they don't have to take call anymore. however, one nurse got fired for something or another and she filed a lawsuit for age discrimination. So there went the over 55 no call.
