Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2021

Published

Hey everyone!

I haven't seen a post for Fall 2021 yet so here it is!

My choices are:

1. UofT

2. McMaster

3. Nipissing SPP

I started my OUAC application in November and now trying to work on the supplemental packages. My CASPer Test is on January 12, 2021.

I need to take Anatomy and Physio course(s) however, I'm having a hard time figuring out what would satisfy the requirements from all three universities. My options so far are:

1. Take CBLG 101 in Winter and CBLG 111 in Spring at Ryerson. However final grade will be in June; hoping that's fine.  This satisfies all 3 unis

2. Take SCS 2159 in Winter from UofT which is enough for UofT and McMaster but not for Nipissing. I have to take an Anatomy course just for Nip.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from back home, been working as an RECE in Toronto the last 8 years, have a Diploma in Nonprofit Management at Ryerson. My cGPA is 3.55 which I'm worried about. Lots of extra curricular activities from university and volunteering here in Toronto.  I still have to compute the GPA for the last two years.

I requested WES to send my transcripts to Nip and McMaster and asked my old uni to send to UofT.

It's been an expensive application so far; really hoping I get in! Looking forward to chatting with you all and sharing our experiences.

Does anyone have an update on if/when McMaster would be sending more offers.

Hi,

Has anyone heard from York University recently? My application has been "under consideration" for 3 weeks now :(.

for UofT, do placements and clinical start in first semester?

do UofT placements typically start right at the beginning of September?

They do! I think someone may have posted a quick run down of what clinical looks like in first year, but I can also share here!

I believe traditionally in first semester, half the semester was a geriatrics placement and the other half was maternity. However, due to covid this year, our first semester was either a mental health or geriatrics placement (not both). But we were still able to start right from September! We also had an in-person lab that ran once every two weeks in first semester (although I'm not sure how this compares this previous years).

In second semester, we have three rotations: pediatrics, acute adult care (I.e. general surgery, general medicine), and maternity (or more specifically, postpartum). And no labs.

I think under normal circumstances, the traditional schedule for first year has been: lectures + labs from Monday to Wednesday and then clinicals twice a week on Thursday and Friday.

If anyone has any other questions, let me know - I'd be happy to answer them ?

Does anyone know if Western is still giving out offers? They "deferred for final grades" and I have yet to hear anything since...

Thank you so much for replying! That was super helpful ? I was just wondering that since placements start so early and we haven’t really learned that much, what do you typically do in them at the start? I’m a bit nervous that I’ll be really unprepared that early in the semester.

Yes they are apparently majority of their offers come out on June 1st

I emailed western about this last week. This is what they sent me back: 7C9DE976-0FF9-4A81-873B-D65964CD5EE0.thumb.jpeg.984bb6907986767be4735ee8a711c70d.jpeg

o mg trust me, I was in the exact same position. Prior to entering the program, I had no volunteer/job experience at a hospital and had no idea how to interact with patients. In my personal experience, it felt like we were just thrown into clinical! But, you're in a group with 3-4 other students who are in the same boat! And the clinical instructors are super nice and most, if not all the patients I've encountered have been very receptive to having a student be a part of their care!

The very first clinical day is generally dedicated to orientation - learning to use the hospital's system, touring the hospital/unit, stuff like that! And the first day also usually includes some time to shadow a nurse - just observing and asking any question you may have.

On the second day, you'll be assigned one patient and while it can feel overwhelming to just start caring for a patient, you start off with the basics, especially in the first placement! Taking vital signs, helping with activities of daily living (I.e. personal hygiene, feeding). And generally, with each week, you'll start to learn new skills and take on more of the patient's care.

You're really not expected to know everything from the start, or even later into the placement! You have other students, your clinical instructor, and the nurses on the unit to always ask questions to - and everyone really is there to support your learning! I'd say don't go in trying to know everything, as that can be stressful, but just go in with an open mind to learn! I'm sure you'll do great and really get the hang of things ?

Give it time, a bunch of people including myself had offers that just expired 3 days ago. Mine was also under consideration for more than a month before I got my offer. I think it's likely you'll get accepted to York because they just have so many spots to fill. Best of luck!!

Congratulations on everyone’s offer so far.

I know it’s like the millionth time of asking but just incase it got missing in the thread I’m asking again, Is there anyone taking or had taken UNB anatomy online or Pathophysiology?

LOL I hope someone eventually responds

thank you
