No, to undertake the ONP you have to already be a registered nurse in your own country, and why would the NMC register a nurse who is not licensed to nurse in her own country, there is no way around this. Also the NMC requires you to have at least 1 years experience as working as a nurse before they will consider allowing you UK registration.
The NVQ was never going to let you practice as a nurse in the UK which is something that many people on this site have been saying for quite some time. At the end of your course you are going to have to go home, it is not a short cut to working as a nurse in the UK.
Actually you have nothing to lose when you apply for the NMC at this point since the process takes some time, around 3-4 months (granting you have met the qualifications and have the complete requirements). If you are willing to shell out more or less 12K (for NMC application fee and courier fees), then it's a wise thing to do. At least you have something working in the background, that is, if you really want to work in UK. Otherwise, weigh your options.
hi just wanna ask.. i'm graduate of BSN in the philippines and now i'm currently enrroled in NVQ uk for 2 years... is it possible for me to take the ONP after the NVQ course eventhough i'm not a licensed nurse in my country?
In order to take the ONP, you will need to show them a decision letter from the NMC. In order to receive this letter, you obviously need to apply for registration to the NMC. As others have said, you must have one year post-certificate experience in your own country before applying.
I just visited Bournemouth University in July and they are still offering the ONP but not any extended placement if it is decided that you need that. Also, the website shows dates through 2011 in which they will be offering the programme.

must draw attention to this big red flag - it does not cost "12k" (what currency is that?) for nmc fees, even including the onp tuition. any "courier fees" that put the costs up that far are, in my opinion, exploiting the applicant. it did cost me about 3k american dollars for all costs, including the home office application for the visa at the time. i am aware there are unscrupulous companies in certain countries that run rackets to get people into the uk for mega-charges, but they should not be patronised. comments?
