Only hospital jobs?

U.S.A. California

Published

I am from California going to an out-of-state school and have been following up on what's going on in CA. Most of the posts it seems here are discussing hospital-related jobs and how difficult it is to get one. Is anyone out there trying to apply to non-hospital jobs? Outpatient, community health, things like that? Thanks.

Applying for everything and anything. Using every connection I can. I can't go out of state. I'm in SoCal and the market is SATURATED.

Once again, yes, yes, yes, and yes, Expharmagirl!

To be honest (and this isn't meant to be offensive to the OP), I get tired of people telling me I should just try looking outside of hospital. As if I haven't already been doing that, truthfully, I find it a little offensive. If one more person says, "You should just try doctors offices or something!" I might scream.

Like most people, I have a dream job. Like most people, I do everything I can to get that dream job. And, like most people, I'm also applying for any and all jobs, because let's face it, you can't be picky in this market.

Specializes in Near Future: ED, Future Future: ACNP!.

Totally agree RNinC. Also, I can't just pick up and move out of state on a whim.

Exactly. My husband has a great job that pays very well. We can't just walk away from that.

I also want to say that I think most people have good intentions when they give advice. It's just frustrating to hear because it comes across as if they think I've been lazy (or too picky) with my job search. At this point it's hard not to take things personally. I'm sensitive. Ha. :)

I agree. I think people do have good intentions too :) but when you keep hearing it over and over again you do start to feel as if people think you are lazy and dumb.My husband has a great job too and our house is a couple hundred thousand under water (bought at the wrong time).

I'm not sure if you thought I was telling you to look outside of the hospital; rather, I was stating that everyone is telling me that I "need" to work in a hospital to be considered a "real" nurse.

This is all rather discouraging ... and depressing.

It can be done. I graduated in May and I work in outpatient mental health. It took me almost four months after licensure to be hired. Out of my class of 70ish, I only know of a handful of people that are still unemployed and most of the people I have kept in touch with work in hospitals in the Sacramento and Stockton area.

Thank you for this, Cobee. It is these little glimmers of success that keep the hope alive. Congratulations on your job! And congrats to your graduating class!
