Does anybody who has been accepted to nursing school have any experience with doing their prerequisites online? There seems to be quite a few accredited schools out there now that offer nursing prereqs 100% online. While it's tempting because these will fit into my full time work schedule, I worry that nursing schools may not accept these credits with the lab component being online. Info on online prereqs taken from any school would be great, but it would be especially great if anyone has experience transferring credits from Portage (aka Geneva College).
Thanks!

Check with the specific schools you're interested in - some will accept them and some won't.
Yeah, it definitely depends on the school and I have checked - and unfortunately was given the "we'll evaluate the course for equivalency only after you take it and send us the transcript". Makes it kind of tough, so I'm just trying to get a general consensus of how its worked out for anyone who's done their prereqs online.

I've used portage for chemistry, psychology, and developmental psych. I've had no problem with these courses transferring. I have found many schools (though not all) will take chemistry with the lab online, but a lot of them won't accept A&P or micro with labs online. I took those classes in person at a local community college instead.
Thank you!!

As long as the nursing program has said that they will take online classes with an online lab in general, then I wouldn't worry too much as long as the school you are taking the online class from is regionally accredited. No school is going to tell you that they will 100% transfer ANY class, so that answer isn't something out of the ordinary. I got a similar answer when asking about all my previous credits (all physical classes) transferring so I wouldn't have to take some of the prereqs.
Just know that sometimes the online lab component require you to purchase a lab kit, and I've heard some being like $350+.
That's helpful info, thanks :)

Does a local community college offer the courses online? It might be best to try there.

I was just accepted to nursing school with online prereqs that I took at Johns Hopkins (Human Development and Statistics). However, I'd like to echo what others have said about checking with the nursing school(s) that you hope to apply to and find out what their policy is regarding online prereqs and virtual labs. I cannot sing enough praises about Johns Hopkins and their online prereq program offered by the School of Nursing there. I was able to take and complete the two classes that I needed in an 8-10 week period. The cost was high (about $1000 per class), but as I was working full-time, trying to get in volunteer experience to help my nursing school application, all the while juggling family commitments and responsibilities, the cost of my time was an even bigger consideration and nothing beat being able to go about this remotely and from the comforts of home. Best of luck to you!

I do know at my school I am able to do online classes however all of my science courses have to be in class they won't accept any sciences that are taken online. Just check in with your school to make sure.

I took almost all my prerequisites at Portage and had a great experience (also working full time). I took nutrition at Rochester online as well. I am now in ABSN program and had no difficulty with these credits.
Good Luck!
