OHSU ABSN to FNP 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey all!

Long time lurker, but now that the application deadline has passed, I feel comfortable finally starting a post.

Just curious to hear who else applied to this program. It's fascinating to me to hear about people's different experiences, stats, expectations, etc. I'm also wondering what other programs people might've applied to? I got my submission in for the Portland ABSN program as well.

Best of luck to everyone! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and perspectives.

From past years threads, OHSU unfortunately seems to move a lot slower in terms of both announcing interview dates and in letting people know they've been admitted. There seems to be a long-standing trend of people having to put down deposits elsewhere because they haven't heard from OHSU yet, which is pretty unfortunate. I haven't heard anything yet but know they've been telling people 4 to 7 days in advance about interviews so I'd assume second(ish) week of February is when we should be hearing about the FNP interviews.

This is what I have seen from past cycles as well. I am fortunate enough to live close, but 4 to 7 days is a tough turn around time for anyone flying in. Hopefully we hear by end of February :)

I'm a Portland native and live here so it's not difficult for me but that does seem really insane/borderline inconsiderate for out of state applicants. Interviews are Feb 20 and 21st so we'll definitely hear before the end of February!

I'm from the East Coast and definitely am a bit worried about timing. Given that their interview date options are also mid-week (none on Mondays or Fridays for PMHNP), I would likely need to take the day before and after off as well. Unless they offer Skype interviews, I can imagine that (financially and work related) it may not be possible for some to make it with a four day notice. I'm hoping for notifications a week or two prior!

My guess is they have a phone interview option, Yale offered that for people that couldn't make it. From what I have heard, taking the phone interview doesn't hurt your application at all either so thats great. I hope that OHSU also offers that :)

I've been wondering, if this is a site to help others that have applied why when someone asks what was asked in the interview there is no answer, besides saying not to worry too much? The people are nice etc etc....Is anyone else bothered by this?

I think people may have trouble recalling specific questions, particularly if it feels more like a conversation.

OHSU appears to give very, VERY specific instructions that interview/essay questions and format are not to be discussed with anyone else. I think I remember someone saying you even had to sign a non-disclosure agreement about it, but I could also just be totally imagining that. It's not that they don't want to help, it's that it's something OHSU explicitly doesn't allow.

It seems like they've been doing them slightly further out this year (like a full week) so I think you should be good. I'm about 99% sure that they don't do Skype or phone interviews though, given the fact there is also a proctored essay you have to complete (at least there has been in the past). The fact a lot of people may not be able to make it is super frustrating but is also probably just another way of weeding people out. Means less applications for them to sift through at the end.

I heard it was only the essay. I don't see what the big deal is. Plus on another post, a person posted questions asked, it was like a year or two ago.

I saw it on posts from last year as well, if I remember correctly. Not saying I understand it or like it either, just telling you how it appears to be. There are tons of great nursing program interview resources out there so even though it'd be nice to be able to prepare for specifics, they are going to change year to year and as long as you utilize some resources, you should be fine.

That's true

Luckily I have the banked time and money to go if needed - I just can imagine it being tough for others. Good to know about the proctored essay, though, and that likely no remote option exists. Thank you!
