College of the Mainland (Fall 2017)

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone! I applied and was accepted into the nursing program at College of the Mainland for the incoming Fall 2017 term. I wanted to see if there was anyone out there also starting this incoming semester. I am from Houston, so I'm somewhat of a drive to COM and wanted to start getting to know my classmates! :) Also, if there's anyone who has already started the program, could you share your experience so far with classes and clinicals and how it all works. I know we will be told all of this during orientation, but I would like to have a heads up. Will anyone be working while in school? Sorry for so many questions! Thanks!

Congrats on your acceptance. Im currently in the program, going into my 3rd semester. I work during the program but it is part-time d/t the hectic schedule. Overall, I would say that i like the program. It is definitely challenging and frustrating at times, but I've learned so much throughout the time I have been in there.

I too got accepted and start this fall and live in Houston. I'm curious were you able to get into the Dosage Calculations class?

Congratulations!!! I'm start this fall as well what part of Houston do live in?

Oh wow!!!1 Lucky You! Did you work throughout the whole program and if so how many hours could you handle working a week and going to school? This is something that I am very worried about. Just trying to see how I will juggle it all. Also, I registered and my schedule is thur. & fri. does that sound right or is their a whole lot that I am not aware of?

I work about 20-24 hours a week, depending on what i have scheduled to do. The thursday and friday does sound about right, for now, but midway through the semester you will have to go to a clinical on any given day. We usually dont find out clinical schedules until the week before so its tricky. My first semester i worked about 32-40 hours, which was alittle much.

Oh Wow!! that gives me hope I was told over and over again that as a nursing student you can not work.thanks for the info.would you recommend anything that I can do over the summer so I'm prepared for the fall.

Ummm... I guess if I could do it all over again, I would review the nursing skills. Checking BP, placing and removing urinary catheters, cleaning a trach. Throughout the semester you are going to have to demonstrate the skills to various professors and you can only make like one mistake, so its best to understand it early. Health assessment is also another class people seems to have a tough time in but it really isn't that bad. There's no easy way to study that early though. If you were to read if now you'd probably forget come semester time.

HELLO! i never noticed that people wrote on here! lol. I'm from pasadena, so im about 35 mins away without traffic.

I don't think so, I have not found the page either. I had an extra book for sale if you have not already bought your books yet.
