online lic verification replacing paper lic.

OK here is a question, my state, Indiana has gone away with paper nursing lic. In fact this was the final year they were sent and there is no exp date. From now on, your employer will verify your lic online at the states web site. OK great. Simple enough.

Well here is an odd thing that happened to someone I work with. Her name is not that common by the way. Common 1st name, not so common last name. Susie Veranda (not her real name but you get the point) so Susie graduate nursing school and sends her money off to PearsonVue, but did not send it to the state. Susie is sweet, but kind of dingy. Then she gets an email from PearsonVue with her ATT, Susie has a test date. Susies name is on line but it has no lic number yet, because she has yet to take Nclex. Susie pulls it up and sees it is listing her in a different city, she thinks they made a mistake. We tell her, no, when you sent in your paper work to the state they have to have your correct address. Susie then says, "well I never sent anything to the state, it is still on the fridge" Sweet silly Susie!!!

So Susie calls Pearson Vue who she got the ATT from, and after about 45min and a talk with a supervisor they realized there is anothe Susie Veranda in the state of Indiana who also graduated nursing school in may, who also sent Pearson Vue money as well as the state of Indiana.

So say our sweet silly Susie never did take boards. If you look online a Susie Veranda is a lic nurse, lic the same year Susie graduated nursing school....

Do other states only have online lic verification? I mean I am sure many people share the same 1st /last name and the online lic verification does not have soc numbers.

I'm a new grad in MA, and I believe we also receive the paper license in the mail, so not sure if this helps. On our BON website, my listing shows my name, title, license number, school I attended, date of boards & date license given, as well as date of expiration (which would be my DOB in the next even numbered year for RNs)...Do licenses expire on your birthday in your state? If so, what are the odds that these two Suzie's have the same DOB. This is an interesting situation, because I have an extremely common first & last name myself. There must be more information recorded somewhere that can verify which Suzie is who.

We are going to online licensing as well. In Texas, you have the option to verify a license by either name, social security, or license number. If hospitals are smart, they will choose to verify by either social security or license number. It seems that is the only way to make sure you are verifying the right person.

But each license issued has a unique number. Susie Veranda #1 has license #RN-0001 and Susie Veranda #2 has license # RN-0002.
