Hi everyone,
I graduated ASN in June of 2020, work currently in a psychiatric hospital on the Dual unit. I work periodically on the adult psych and adolescent units. I want to continue my education. I am 52 and basically "starting over in life." I want to not only help people but I also need to make the most money for my time (I know money isn't everything but it is an important factor here). I"m thinking PMHNP school online. My GPA in school was a 2.8, this limits my choice with online schools. It looks like Walden may be the only one that would work for me.
I'm looking for input from others. Input regarding Walden, other school suggestions, different routes in nursing to achieve my goals, etc.....
Thank you so much in advance.

And as you all point out there are 50,000 people attending Walden right now, how many are “numerous people”who are having trouble getting a job. And how do they know it’s because Walden is on their resumes? You are the one making assumptions.
Numerous people have commented on numerous threads about this subject stating that when they see Walden or another diploma mill school the resume goes in the trash. That's hard evidence and fact. I've yet to see anyone claim that they are excited to see a Walden graduate or that they've ever heard someone comment they got an interview because of Walden on their resume. Have you?

I don’t really care what the “numerous people”, unknown people, are saying. Because I have the experience of going to Walden and I know for myself!! I have never been mislead, I knew what the cost would be, and I knew I would have to get my own preceptors. So as far as the lawsuit claims, I have never had any of those issues. I know I’m getting a good education. And yes, when my daughter gets her job with Walden University on her résumé, that will be a hard fact for you! You have taken such a hard stand against Walden that you can’t put aside your pride and think, “Hmm maybe they do provide a good education”. I, and others, would be idiots to listen to you when we have the experience of going to Walden.
And shame on whoever it was who responded to a person asking about Walden by insulted his intelligence!

Yes, you are already a known quantity for them. You surely show up on time, complete your professional tasks and are an independent learner.
If someone in the Walden program whom you did not know, called for a preceptorship would you equate their competencies, work ethic and knowledge at the same level of yours? Would you okay their NP clerkship knowing only that they came from Walden? When you read those wonderful discussion posts, did you ever wonder how they were evaluated as having college level writing skills?
You have said we can't put aside our pride. Well...
I preceptored someone from Walden for an MSN nursing education degree. In 10 weeks for clinical practice, she only came on time only once. I read one of her papers and it lacked references and frankly was high school level. She was untruthful and unprofessional. When I called the school to ask about the criteria I would evaluate her on, I was told you won't get that until she is done. (?) I was also told to 'just pass her on'.
Frankly, If anyone is considering Walden, I would urge caution in enrolling and contracting tuition until the DOJ investigations were completed. Investigations like this one are not instituted on a whim. There is plenty of documental evidence supporting the DOJ claims I am sure.

Actually I feel you are coming across as smug. You are attending ONE NP Program and your knowledge is based on that fact. You have established connections for preceptorships but think everyone will have the same advantages as you.

Throughout the courses there are quizzes, a midterm, and a final, depending on the class. Be advised that frequently when doing assignments you will provide a 360° video of your room with your computer to ensure you are not cheating.
This is the MINIMUM of any graduate program (and many demand more) and a 360 degree video would mean you are in the center of the room when taking the exam.
Best wishes and I mean that , you may have lucked out and I hope every one who commits to Walden with their effort and bank account (or loan indebtness) has the same great spirit, experience, clinical connections and faith as you.

I measure a good NP school by their level of attrition, the percentage who actually graduate, and the percentage who actually pass boards first or second try. Qualify your “good education” in these terms.

Why are you defensive about others sharing their anecdotal experience when you’re simply an additional n+1? Schools don’t just magically have a DOJ investigation show up at their door. Great to hear your daughter went to Walden. Great to hear you are, too. It sounds like you have a nice circle of people who understand your clinical background and can make employment decisions based on that. Recruiters and hiring managers sift through hundreds of applications for a few spots. Guess who gets tossed immediately?
Look, the reality is that not everybody can or should be an NP. This idea that we should be admitting any Tom or Jane off the street into a program if they have the funds is ridiculous. The NP profession needs to hold itself accountable before physicians bend enough legislator ears and have accountability thrust on them. That starts with threads like this where constructive feedback is given.
OP— NP school is not necessarily the answer here. Medicine is a serious endeavor and you have less than a year of RN experience. Your GPA is borderline failing in most nursing schools. Even if you work full time the next 1-2 years, do you believe 500 clinical hours is going to make you a competent prescriber? Would you be comfortable with a family member of friend being treated by a clinician with your background?
If you’re absolutely set on this— take the advice given and retake some science courses, apply to a state school, and murder your 3Ps. Good luck!
A for profit school leads to a 68% NCLEX pass rate, does a bunch of shady stuff, then loses accreditation. Yet another example of the dangers of for profit schools.
