One thing I learned today is that honesty will get you nowhere in Nursing School.

Published

I was supposed to take an exam at 8:30 am in the morning today, but my phone which was fully charged and plugged in decided to completely die over night, how? I have no idea.

I woke up at around 10:00 am and noticed how bright my room was, I quickly tried looking at my phone to see the time and noticed it was off. Yep, I have missed a nursing exam! I felt sick to my stomach and started panicking.

The very thing I immediately did was explain my situation honestly to my instructor and what happened. Our Syllabus policy states that we are able to make up an exam with a VALID excuse before the test, but I of course decided to be honest, and well, guess what? I was denied my exam and got a big fat 0.

So I pretty much lost a letter grade.

Anyway, I know the instructors will tell you to be honest all the time, but in situations like mine, you should lie.

She even encouraged me drop out of nursing school, even though I got A's on my last two exams. I can still make a B if I worked hard, but I can't believe she would encourage that.

That's my rant, thanks for listening.

Work hard, continue to get A's, take the B for the course, and learn from the experience. Not a pleasant experience I am sure but if that is the best outcome, accept it and go for it. The part that irks me is the instructor telling you to drop out of nursing because of this incident. Really!!! Karma is a ***** and I wonder if she would like to be fired if she were to oversleep and miss a class.

We have only the OP's side of that story. If this sort of thing has happened more than once -- or other gross examples of immaturity -- perhaps the instructor is correct.

The member who started this thread does not understand that honesty & integrity are the cornerstones of what it means to be a nursing professional. The fact that your user name is 'glorifiedbuttwiper' speaks volumes...

The enormous issue I have with this post is that I can only "like" it once!

I'd like to offer an alternative perspective (I know I'll get flamed), do all the people here sitting on their high horse think a lie is ALWAYS bad? Consider the following scenario: you are alone at home when a bloody beat up woman knocks on your door and rushes inside. She tells you that two gun men are after her. Two seconds later the gun men knock and ask you if you've seen a woman around. Now, would you lie and say no and in the process saving the woman? Or would you tell the truth and risk getting yourself and the other woman killed? If you do not lie in this scenario then you are an *******! For the OP, it's not a matter of honesty, it's a matter of self preservation. If I knew telling the truth would result in me failing the test, you better believe I would have come up with an alternate more creative excuse. Now go ahead and flame me but know before you do that in life not everything is black and white , there is a lot of gray. Go ahead and let go of your hypocrisy and show the OP some sympathy.

Your scenerio has nothing to do with the OP's oversleeping and missing a test. For the OP, it was a matter of honesty. Honesty and integrity are required in our profession. If you don't get that, quit now.

Honesty, yes but I'll say it again, life is gray.

Screen name is clearly a fake account made to avoid long lasting consequences from a controversial post.

Really? Then why use the selfie as an avatar?

How do you know that's the OP ? Ever watch catfish?

Letting someone die when in a position to prevent it safely is the same as killing the person yourself, way to go.

I'm not sure that answering the door and letting the woman in would be safe, either. Suppose she was an escaped felon and the guys after her were police? Best thing to do would be dial 911.

How did you ever pass the NCLEX ? Why are you adding elements to the scenario ?

How did you ever pass the NCLEX ? Why are you adding elements to the scenario ?

And how did you make the jump from the irresponsibility of oversleeping and lying about it to someone running for their life and lying to save it? Apples to oranges comparison. Make an apple to apple comparison, and maybe people will take you seriously. Also, what does any of that have to do with ability to pass NCLEX?

In your case I think it does. So the guy accidentally sleeps in due to his messed up phone and you are so quick to label him irresponsible. Wow.

And yes, I think it does show a lack of compassion and understanding. Humans mess up. Accidents happen. Technology fails. It isn't like he hurt or killed someone. He accidentally slept in and from the sounds of it, the OP is a great student who doesn't make a habit out of skipping or sleeping through class.

I believe in a thing called mercy. An otherwise solid student should not have to withdraw from an entire semester for something like this.

I'm not sure where you came to the conclusion that this guy was a solid student, a great student or that he doesn't make a habit out of skipping or sleeping through. Unless you actually work or go to school with him, there's no way for you to know that.

Holding someone accountable for their screw-ups does not mean lacking in compassion or understanding. Some folks don't learn without consequences.

You have a point, I'll think of a better scenario.

I guess I got lucky when I took the NCLEX since I didn't have the infamous "bloody woman shows up at your door" question. Seriously though, you can't give an non-nursing example (that is is critical thinking situation anyway, not a multiple choice question) and then bring up the NCLEX.

In addition, how can one successfully practice nursing without considering the alternatives? Sure, if you want to pass the NCLEX, you never add to the scenario or ask "what it." Well, when you are on the stand, the plaintiff's attorney is most definitely going to ask you "what if?" Very rarely does real life nursing narrow it down to 4 possibilities.
