On-Line Anatomy and Physiology Accredited

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Dear Listmates: Does anyone know of an accredited A&PI that is offered on-line? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi! I went to the Cayuga site and looked into registering for Anatomy and Phys I, but it had a prereq of Biology 101, Essentials of Biology. Did you have to complete this class before you could do Anatomy I?

Glow Worm,

Ocean County College in Toms River NJ is fully accredited and offers A&P I and II ONLINE (with lab) all summer long. Many students take the prerequisite science courses online at OCC and then go back to their local nursing program. There were many students from Alaska in my class taking their prerequisites waiting to start their programs in Alaska.

OCC offers hands-on labs with a microscope and a labpaq delivered to your door step. Here is the link to their science online courses:

Jersey nursing Girl

Jersey Girl,

I am also in NJ....i'm interested in OCCC's online ap1 and 11 and mico. Do you know if the classes show as online courses on the transcript? i don't really care but my future endeavors may be limited if they show as online....

I recommend Cayuga Community College online courses, they have almost every prereq for nursing you'll need including sciences and math. I took A+P I &II, micro, intro soc, intro pysch, life span, english I&II, west civil and child psych all online. The great thing about them is they have a lab component on a cd that you do and then only get quizzed on them so no having to turn in or do physical labs. Micro you do have to buy a lab kit and do them at home but honestly as long as you do good lab reports you'll be fine because the pics I took of my labs weren't visible and I still got all credit minus 1 point for forgetting to attach a pic. It depends on which professor you get whether the final will be in person but if you live farther out you can get it sent to an approved proctor. I haven't ran across a class that makes you take proctored tests they're usually all online. The only class I took that required me to come in for a final was A+P II which the final was easy because most of the questions were on previous tests. My sister took it at Cayuga also and had a different professor and didn't have to go in for a final they just did it online. If you can sign up quick because they have summer session courses that have started and they have more starting second session around july and they only last 5 weeks so you can have like 2-4 classes knocked out by end of summer but the max is 15 cr for summer. Then during the regular semester they have accelerated online classes especially for psych, english, soc, and most of the time A+P and these only last half semester so you can knock out 4-5 more classes in fall. The schools I applied to accepted all my classes. My sister knocked out 4 classes last summer of prereqs and she was accepted into the only school she applied to. By the way the transcript lists all online courses just as if you were sitting in the classroom itself it doesn't designate online or not. I'm telling you if you can work it out Cayuga Community College definitely is the way to go if you want to get your classes done in a timely manner and they aren't really even difficult. Depending on your situation and how fast and how many you want to complete, you can get 8 classes done by the end of Dec of this year. Hope I was of some help. Good Luck!!!

I currently taking A&P I online at Cayuga CC. I am going to take A&P II this summer online with Cayuga CC. They offer two different schedules: one is like 10 weeks running from mid end of may to beg of aug and the other is like 5 weeks running from july to august. Which did you or your sister take? Any advice on which one to pick? Its weird because they offer 16 sections of the 5 week course and only 1 section of the 10 week....so it seems as though they are pushing the shorter sections???

hello, can you please give me a rundown of the enrollment process at cayuga cc?, I want to take the A&P I&II. Your help will be appreciated. Also, was the tuition reasonable? and did you pay per credit or per course? thanks!

I took micro, AP1 and AP2 online at cayuga

I am not a student there

I printed the part time, non-degree registration for and faxed it to them

http://www.cayuga-cc.edu/pdf/admissions/PTregistrationform.pdf

biology is required for all of those 3 courses

so I also faxed a copy of the results of my CLEP biology exam

CLEP is sorta/kinda like the AP exams

http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/ex_bio.html

so they accept CLEP, AP and other college intro to bio courses

the tuition was inexpensive but that's because I live in new york state so I was able to get in state tuition

the classes are completely online

here's a review I wrote for another site

I'm currently taking anatomy and physiology 2 at

Cayuga Community College, which is a SUNY school (State University of New York)

http://www.suny.edu/student/campuses_complete_list.cfm Complete Campus List

here is the A&P 1 course

https://banweb.cayuga-cc.edu/prodssb/bwckctlg.p_disp_listcrse?term_in=201150&subj_in=BIOL&crse_in=203&schd_in=%

only the BIOL 203 - 7xx sections are online

most of the students are taking it to fulfill nursing entrance requirements, the course transfers to other SUNY schools

It is a 4 credit course, all online, using ANGEL (sorta like BlackBoard)

They do REQUIRE some bio to take the course. I faxed them my copy of my bio CLEP results. They accepted that.

this is the book for both A&P 1 and 2

You take 2 quizzes every week. One for the lab, one for the chapter reading.

Each of the 2 quizzes is online with 10-15 questions of multiple choice and fill in the blank.

Mostly stuff like

"Here is a picture of a male cadaver with 20 items labeled. What is item 3 pointing to?"

and

"Here is a picture of a male cadaver with 20 items labeled. Which number is the lateral condyle?"

The book also contains a CD with a bunch of Flash multimedia labs on it. Each Flash is a simulated laboratory. So you click on a lab icon and follow the directions on a pdf.

Directions might be :

Click on a pipette, drag it to the flame, sterilize it, use the pipette to transfer some chemical to a blood sample, drag the blood to the centrifuge, start the centrifuge, run for 60 seconds, observe and record your findings, dispose of the blood. Repeat for 5 different chemicals for each of 6 different blood types.

So that's all done with flash animations.

The lab test, along with the label the cadaver images, also hss questions regarding the flash simulated lab.

"Which person had the lowest blood sugar? What effect did chemical A have on the results? What effect did chemical B have on the results? Describe the graph of the heart rate."

These are also multiple choice and short fill in in the blank.

Every 3 weeks (so every 3 - 6 chapters, because some weeks cover more than one chapter) you have 2 big exams.

One covering the past 3 labs and another covering the past 3-6 chapter readings.

Instead of 10-15 questions each has 100 questions.

The exams are all timed. 15 minutes for the weekly tests. 120 minutes for each of the bigger exams.

There is also 2 final exams (one for the labs, one for the chapter readings) that cover the whole semester, each 120 minutes, each 100 questions.

There are also 3 discussion questions throughout the semester.

Example: Pick an auto immune disease and write 400 words about it. Reply to 3 other students postings, each reply must be at least 250 words.

The course is a PAIN IN THE BUTT !

The teacher is great, but reading 60 - 80 pages of A&P each week is so freaking boring!

So much chemistry. So many new words. Its a whole new vocabulary.

Everything just starts jumbling together.

When you read it without hearing the words pronounced, without seeing something drawn on the board in real time, it makes it SO DIFFICULT.

You might learn stuff from this course, but you definitely won't be taught anything.

Its exactly the same thing as just buying the books and reading them over the next 15 weeks.

You don't get the interaction that you need to really learn this stuff.

At least, that's the way I feel.

If you can learn that way, good for you. I found it incredibly difficult.

I can learn MS Excel, Statistics and Sociology online, but I think for micro and A&P

these courses really require real time, teacher/student interaction in a classroom.

for example: For Micro I read the section on Lac operon 10 times and never understood it.

I searched youtube, found this video and finally got it.

Now, can you imagine reading that?

I don't think you can just read that kind of stuff and expect to "get it" and retain it.

I think you need someone standing in front of you drawing it on the board and explaining it as they draw. I think you need to be able to ask them questions as they draw it and get explanations of the material.

It is just such a very difficult course to take online.

The thing is I work full time. So I would only have been able to take the classes in the evening and its REALLY difficult to get into a "real" class if you're not already enrolled full time at the school in a nursing program.

Even after saying all this, I still prefer taking classes online instead of taking the subway 45 minutes each way in the evening after work in the middle of winter and going to a B&M school, but I really think I could have learned more, easier if I had taken the classes in a local community college.

I passed micro with a C+, AP1 with a A-, AP2 with a B-.

At least I got a grade, but I'm pretty sure that C+ won't transfer.

MGH Institute of Health Professions also offers online courses for the science pre-reqs. Some of them are A&P 1and2 w/lab, Micro w/lab, Chem w/lab etc. They are pricey but its nice if you have a tough schedule. The school is in Boston but I think you can do everything online.

Mayville State University. I don't know if it's accredited, but it says it's one of the only online A&P classes that include a lab. I took the A&P I last semester and I'm taking A&P II with them now. I was deciding between them and University of Phoenix, but they were cheaper. My adviser suggested I take it because my school only offers A&P I in the fall and A&P II in the spring and I was starting in the spring.

I have been reviewing the website for Mayville ... What do you have to say about their teaching format and how this format adapted to your learning style? Did you find the faculty/staff supportive and able to meet your needs? I would love to hear more details as I make it my business venture into this course. Also, if I plan to attend another community college for my nursing degree, but they use the "quarter" system, instead of the "semester" system how will my credits transfer in order for me to meet their 12 credits vs 8 credits under the semester system. Thanks!

At MGCCC, I got an "B" in A&P I and "As" in A&P II and Microbiology! I found the classes to be very informative and I learned a lot. I took classes with UoP and did not like the idea that your grades are based upon team assignments/ projects. If I get an "A", I want to know that I earned it and vice versa. I also found UoP to be very expensive, $1400 for one class if you are an independent student.

I, too, had a long discussion with U of Phoenix staff today. Though this young lady was very polite and supportive, the two points you just made were my very concern as well.

I'm taking AP1 online right now through ccconline. Its 225.40/credit for out of state (CO). You buy a lab kit and do them at home. The exams are open book but are not easy. We have lots of assignments, labs and journal entries - 1050 points in total for 10 units, with an exam only worth 20. I was worried about them being online too, but when I got my transcripts they show up as regular classes from your 'parent' school. I love my class although its definitely a LOT of work, I'm going to take AP2 and Micro online this summer.

How many weeks were the A&P I, II courses??? Does it matter whether you take the courses in the summer or fall??? Has anyone pursued financial aid while taking online courses??? If so, can you briefly explain your experience (i.e., did you need to declare a degree program or not, how many credits were considered as full-time, etc.)

Hello! I just came along this thread and it is full of usefull information! I am also looking for an online A&P class, but I would like to take it in either Oregon or Washington. Does anyone know of a school that offers this? I have tried looking, but can not find anything!

THANKS!

I'm new to this site but when I read all of the comments; I just had to see if anyone could help. Are these A&P classes together or separate? I'm in Ca and the rules are strict. I need A&P&Micro with labs.

at Cayuga there is a fall A&P class that covers 1/2 of the body systems and then a spring A&P class that covers the A&P of the other 1/2 of the body

so A & P are taught together, but you have to take both the fall and spring courses to cover the entire body

Microbiology is a separate one term course

each of the above 3 course have an accompanying lab
