please do not post your email on the public boards.:)

general members must have 15 meaningful public board posts prior to sending private messages and/or sending emails from the allnurses.com profiles.

we welcome you to allnurses.com and look forward to your posts.

yeah that part was a joke, but thanks for the hint on obtaining a way to send private emails! very helpful in my situation!:grn:

I went to the Lake, my advice would be get a pharmocology book if you have problems remembering things, also you may want to get a drug calculations book and start doing some of the problems and getting a feel. Definitely get the med-surg study guide at the book store when you start your classes using the med surg book. Saunders NCLEX Comprehensive Review, Kaplan Comprehensive Review (helps you get in mode of application, analysis questions), Study guides with the Fund. Book, NCLEX 3500 CD are some of the products I tried to use starting in second semester. First semester learn the concepts really well and try to apply them to scenarios. Make flash cards, recite these concepts. Know them inside/out. Go to instructors if you start to have problems, get a tutor etcc... dont let things go to far before you get help! Hope all this helps :)

toby4,

first of all thank you so much for messaging me back. i have heard nothing but negative horror stories about the olol accelerated nursing program. did you have a science of med background? was it a nightmare? what location did you have your program through?

i hope you don't mind me asking, i am a nervous wreck.

Alwert, you are very much welcome, most of my education is in nursing, however I went to traditional program at OLOL not the accelerated I have heard the accelerated program is very hard. If you can stay up with the fast pace and get alot of help you will do fine. You may want to look in Southeastern's program or Southern if you cant get into OLOL traditional program. Study, study, study is the key and apply the principles. I wish you the best of luck. :)

Toby4 you have given wonderful advice. I would like to add one more: attitude. If you enjoy the learning and the clinicals and come each day with the right attitude you will be able to make it through. I think that those who make it know that they can. The teachers recognize this and will help you as long as you appreciate this opportunity you are getting. If you are excepted into an accelerated program, indeed any nursing program, then you are special so feel that way.

I went to the Tulane accelerated program and it was tough, probably the toughest education year I have ever had. But when I had problems I went for help and was grateful to recieve it. I do not have a science or biology background which made this program even harder. Start studying pharmacology now as Toby4 suggested. That class is designed to weed out those not prepared.

Hi ThrowEDNurse,

You have really given me something to think about. This is also my 2nd shot at school. I currently have a 4.0 (presidents list as well) in my classes at OLOL-BR but I have been told by many that it usually takes 2-3 times before you get accepted. Unfortunately in my situation, I didn't apply anywhere else (should have). So now I am patiently waiting on a response for the Spring 2010 semester. My question is, did you continue taking classes at the Lake until you got in, did you sit out OR did you take classes elsewhere?

why dont you apply at southern university or brcc, i am currently in southern university program and it is awesome, dont get me wrong it is very challenging but i feel like southern's going to give me everything i will use in the real world just a thought, try to take another approach hopes this help.

Thanks Mskay, I actually thought about BRCC, I have been told that it is VERY competitive. Do you have any idea when their deadline is? As for Southern, I don't think I would qualify, for now, may not have all of the prereqs for SU. But I will check into it, just in case. THE WAIT IS KILLING ME

yeah at brcc it is very competitive mainly because they base their gpa on 5 courses which are A&P1.english, college algebra, psychology and an elective and the hesi test. people really do real well in those basic courses mainly because they are very basic and the hesi test is very easy. for example: if you took all your prereqs at brcc and made at least a 3.6 in those courses, made at least an 84 on hesi you are almost guaranteed to get in, on the other hand, if you are a student coming in from another school who have a 4.0 in those courses and never took a class at brcc your chances are slim to none unless you score real high on the hesi (like 95) thats how they look at things at brcc, its made very hard because the classes they are looking at almost everyone made at least an 3.5 and thats what makes it so competitive, i actually got in at brcc and southern for fall 09 and i chose southern so that i could get my bachelors, i recommend applying other places because disappointment is a general outcome when trying to get into nursing schools, be patient, be ready and most of all dont give up, your time is coming trust me!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I see. I won't give up. I am going to be patient. I am sure you know how the wait take its toll. I will find out from BRCC what their deadline / test date is and take a shot at it. Just curious, did you apply at OLOL? Any comments on their program?
