Olive Harvey close Nursing Program

Published

Well it is official, Olive Harvey has closed its nursing program, or should I say reassigned its nursing students to Daley, Truman and Malcolm X. Students were notified today, 7 days before class start. What a political mess with many incompetent individuals following the orders of a bully Mayor who wants to eliminate remedial courses (open door policy) at CCC's. How sad.

Time to uproot my plans for child care, transportation, study sessions, and part-time work to meet the mandatory requirements for reassignment. I am told I am MANDATED to go where I am reassigned and I can not request a change in schedule regardless if it is day or evening courses. If I do not want to travel far or adhere to the reassignment, then drop out of the program.

Also, 200 hundred College Professors are being terminated....so, so sad. Fortgot to mention, the respiratory program is reassigned to Malcolm X too.

I understand. It's unrealistic for me to do it anyway. Just a random thought that i wish was possible. Nursing school is not difficult academically, its the program/administration/organization /the politics of it, that make it extremely difficult for a student to succeed. The student must be very strong willed and filled with determination to persevere.......GOOD LUCK to everyone in a City College RN Program

HoopZ20,

It may difficult for you to transfer from one nursing program to another due to each school's curriculum. For example, students at OH registered for nursing classes and purchased books. Well, Daley indicated OH students must purchase the books for Daley Nursing program (which makes sense).

Unfortunately, some colleges are either behind or advance in specific subject areas. This may be one of the reasons it is difficult to transfer from one nursing program to another. It would only make sense if all CCC utilized the same curriculum (syllabus and unit/subject matter) and text books.

Unfortunately, the Deans directly between the President of MXC and the director of the nursing program INSIST adamantly that all CCC nursing programs have IDENTICAL curriculum.

That's terrible. I wish you the best of Luck in your educational success and if you feel that that's too much, you may want to consider other programs.

I was informed of the closing of nursing programs from a friend at Wright nursing program. I was to start at kkc nursing program in July, then we were told it will start in January and the program will only be once a year, know it is closed no one from the school has informed us of anything, so could someone inform me on how to get into another CCC nursing program. THANKS AND HELLO EVERYONE

roseofsharon,

All the pre-req.'s apply to each CCC.

RN prereqs.

1. Chemistry - B

2. Biology - C

3. Math 118 or higher - B

That's it. It will be challenging in terms of getting accepted due to the number of individuals applying. For example, as a OH student you had a better change of getting accepted due to taking the majority or all of your courses at that institution. This is not to imply that you or any other applicants will not get accepted into another program.

For myself, Daley is OK thus far. Best wishes.

I will apply at Wright and at Truman thanks for the info teacher08 good luck to everyone.

I wish I really knew why the program closed. You know, we all can voice opinions as to what we think the reason is, was, could be, etc. I do not believe I will discover the truth about reasons to close the nursing program.

According to this Sun-Times article, which made me go looking for this thread or one like it, the reason for closing Olive Harvey and Kennedy-King's nursing programs is that they were unaccredited.

Teacher08, I am so sorry to hear about everything that you've gone through (everyone else as well). However, I am glad to hear that students were assigned to other schools instead of being left out to start from scratch. I heard the news early on & called to speak with OH nursing dept. I was told that the schools were "consolidating" & right now they were going to close OH & KKC programs. I was also told there was talk of them eventually narrowing the program down to 1 school, which will most likely be Malcolm X. We all know that will be a disaster. I don't know how soon this may take affect, but I just wanted to share what I was told while speaking with OH's nursing dept.

I don't understand why they would close the other schools if they are accredited & have proven success rates of students passing. Which is the other reason I hear of them closing the 2 schools; a lot of students not passing the exams. It is an effort on both the instructors & the students, but I say they look at the other schools to see what they are doing that is bringing on the success.

movefoward,

Thank you for your kind words. I would have replied earlier however, I have been soooo busy studying!!! Well, the director over the entire CCC nursing programs is now the Director at Daley's Nursing program. The Director from Daley is now teaching at MX.

teacher08, they do seem to be making a lot of changes. Hopefully it will turn out for the better with what they are doing. I have to start off with an LPN program, otherwise I would have to wait until fall of 2011 to start an RN program. But I plan to immediately bridge. I'm thinking about possibly relocating, so I'll have to look into other school's programs as well. Good luck with your studies!!

moveforward,

I like the idea of the LPN and bridging.
