Older workers that are new grad nurses, please explain.

Published

Hi,

I am not going to be popular with this thread, but here goes...I have seen quite a few posts about the older workers that are new grads thinking they deserve a job more because they had a previous career. Many times, these former careers are NOT healthcare related, so it does not help with their nursing career at all. My question to the older workers who are new grads is why do you feel like you deserve jobs over the younger new grads?

I feel like if anything, the older workers seem more entitled than younger workers. When you get a second career, you are starting at ground zero. So, let the opinions fly.

anotherone, I am in a monitoring program. Most people aren't going to jump ship if they are in one as that may be the only job they get.

Boston, I have not had a nursing job--never. I volunteer with my nursing license but no, never a paid position.

20-30 year olds - Sense of entitlement "kids these days " blah blah blah. no commitment since they mostly don't have mortgages. free to follow their bf/gfs were ever. maybe starting to have kids and will need 3 months off

30-40 year olds. dealing with kids. want off for holidays to spend with their kids, soccer games.

40+ chronic health problems realy start showing up. caring for sick/ elderly parents, fmla .....

these are all stereotypes that affect us even though we are all individuals and anyone over 18 can be dealing with any of those things. sometimes all you just have to do is manipulate their faulty beliefs for your benefit.

I am one of the "older" nursing students (I will be 40 when I graduate in the fall), and I do not think I DESERVE a job over the younger one. It can not be helped that I have previous management experience and a 20 year head start on working in the workplace. I already know how to diffuse difficult situation, manage groups of people and balance personal/work life. Mastery of those things only comes from experience. I will interview like everyone else, and if I get the jobs great, but I can not deny what I bring to the table

wooh, M/S has less than ICU.

Not really. And with the number of patients, it's way easier to divert. But with your volunteer experience and lack of work experience, I'm sure you know more than someone that's actually worked as a nurse.

Have you put "would have an abortion" on your resume? Because how do you think a potential employer is going to know to cut you out of the generalization that young women take maternity leave?

It's not about YOU. For the employer, it's about, "Who should I hire to get my best return on investment?" They don't read this thread on an and say, "I'm going to hire that person." You don't need to convince US, we aren't going to hire you. And be grateful for that, as this thread isn't putting you in a good light. You're coming across as a naive young woman that thinks she knows everything and can't appreciate what others bring to the table. Not a good fit for a job that requires teamwork and has a steep learning curve.

Just because a 20-30 yr old doesn't have a mortgage doesn't mean they don't have an apartment to pay the rent on...they aren't living in the streets...

Lease = 1 year commitment that's easy to get out of to move somewhere else.

Mortgage = 15-30 year commitment that's difficult to get out of because you have to actually sell the house, and in this market, that's not at all easy.

wooh, I have not dealt with more narcotics on M/S than ICU. I picked M/S everytime I could in school. So, I do have something to compare it to. I'll tell you the floor on M/S that gave a lot of narcotics and it's a floor I didn't apply to--ortho. That had a lot of narcs, I didn't apply for ortho M/S floors. I personally do not like ortho.

After the one year, you usually re-new the lease. Most people do not get up and move constantly younger or older. What's the rational that a younger person would get up and move? I personally can only stay in VA because I have a single state license. Once I find the area I have a job in, that's it. I do not know why younger people would move constantly. I like to travel across the state, but not move constantly.

wooh, you stereotype all women. I do not want kids I have made that clear. I have even told an interviewer that before. I think it's stereotype that women must want kids cause after all, they are capable of having them, they must want them.

Well, you've done both in school. I've done both in the real world. It doesn't make a difference to me. I thankfully don't have to worry about it. You've been warned. Feel free to ignore the warning.

And if you don't understand the difference in obligations between an option to renew a lease and another 29 years left on a mortgage, well, perhaps you will once you've had either.

I do not understand why it makes a difference if you have to keep renewing a lease. If you live 15 years in an apartment or have a 15 year mortgage, it is the same. People sell houses, too. You are not entirely stuck with a house.

PS you said option, option doesn't mean you have to move out of an apartment after a year...I honestly have not seen young people just up and move constantly like you are describing. I think I did everything I could to try and pick jobs that I wanted and would stay at.

I mean, if you all would prefer the older crowd due to a mortgage, then pick the older one. I know I did my best to narrow them down to what I would stay at.

This discussion isn't really getting anywhere.

As far as the narcotics thing, I thought I would be helping people out by not applying for an area that I would constantly have to ask someone to give a narcotic. It blew up into something else entirely.
