older "new nurses"

Published

I see threads about how nurses "eat their young", but is it the same with the older new nurses entering the field? I am one of the older newbies, so far I have had wonderful clinical experiences. I am starting my job this week. :specs:

The "young" in that statement refers to new nurses, not chronologically young nurses. I've had the experience of being eaten as a CNA student and a nursing student, but not as a nurse. I hope I've never treated any newbies like that.

I am about to become an "old-new" nurse and I say bring it on!

I haven't been attacked as a student (at least not yet). I'm hoping things will go well on the job (they went well during my externship). People in all walks of life seem to take great pleasure in finding fault with others. I'm confident in my ability to learn and to overcome whatever faults they might rudely stick in my face (or whisper behind my back). No problem.

Lucky you! I don't think you have to be chronologically young for this to be true, and it usually isn't true, thank God!

Absolutely! I was 45 when I started my first job as RN on a cardiac telemetry floor. I had the preceptor from hell, and she left work with a full stomach every day.

Sorry dude, there is no respect for elders. I was forty when first started on a med surg floor. It was the worst year of my life.

That about says it all. :uhoh21:

My experience has been that the younger nurses are less apt to be eaten as they don't "look" old enough to know what they're doing.

I certainly hope your experiences are much different!:nurse:

Not sure I agree with this, having been the recipient both when I was young and older. There are just some ppl that enjoy a power trip. But the majority of nurses are not like this.

I dont believe in "eating" any new nurses. I think the respect you get as a new nurse is entirely dependant on how receptive you are to differences in thinging between you and the preceptor. If you have the "preceptor from hatez" then go to the nurse manager and see if there is someone else you can work with. No reason for anyone to be intentnionally mistreated as far as im concerned.

I think it depends on your work environment and how much you let roll off your back. I have a wonderful preceptor, but there are nurses on my unit that are on a power trip. I mostly ignore them. I do think that being older I one, don't get as much crap as a younger nurse, and two, I don't let what I do get bother me.
