Older PN Students

Published

Hi,

I was just curious to know how many others (Canadian's) are headed back or working on their PN or BSN now that they are in their 30's and 40's?

I've noticed that there are quiete a few students in my age group which has really put me at ease, however what about after graduation? Will we be hired or will the younger students be hired over us?

Just a side note, was talking with my mom today and when she was the same age I am now she went back to school as well(back in 73), tried to enter into the RN program (the LPN program of today ;) ) and was denied because of her age, this has made me even more determined to finish the program :nurse:.

Specializes in acute care med/surg, LTC, orthopedics.

Second career for me, I was in my 30's and those in my program varied from 20-something to 50-something.

And as for this: "Will we be hired or will the younger students be hired over us?" That's discrimination = not acceptable!

My manager prefers to hire "mature" applicants. Fewer dramas and mat leaves to work around.

She just said her ideal candidates are males or females over 45. Yup, she had six mat leaves to cover in the last year and is feeling a tad cynical.

Thanks for the replies...:)

Yes I know that is discrimination, though we all know it is wrong and shouldn't happen, truth being it does, not just in nursing but at many places of employment.

One, regardless of their career shouldn't be hired on age, they should be hired on performance regardless of whether they are 25 or 55 :)

Hmm Im not 45, have a while before hitting that number so I guess I wouldn't get hired on there...:p lol

My mother and I went to LPN school together. I was 20 years old and she was 50 years old. She did not have any problem finding a nursing job. This was many many years ago when there really was a nursing shortage. In today's world, I think people of all ages are having trouble finding jobs.:crying2:

Not nurses in my part of Canada.

well, Ottawa has always been special.

The reality is Alberta underwent a brutal hiring freeze which is just starting to thaw. Not every nurse wants to work in LTC but many had to swallow their ambitions and work there in the private sector just to be able to pay their bills.

BC had a bad time of it. And from what other posters in Ontario have said, it's been hard in most of that province as well.

I began LPN course upgrades when I was 30, started the program at 31, finished at 32. Am now 34 and will start my BScN upgrades in January.

Hope to be finished with a BScN by the time I'm 40.

Best of luck! :nurse:

Get cracking woman, usually there is a seven year time limit on completing the degree.

Yeah, well I havn't even started the prereqs yet  I hope to register for University for Sep 2012 and be finished in May/June of 2015, so I'll be 39 then. Doing it by 40 is my own personal time limit.

Didn't your PN programme include some of them? Out here English, Psych, and Sociology have been included since '05, to make potential bridging easier. But the rats have done away with the bridge, so at least the prereqs still count.

Just an update!
