Ok, Fine... no Ivy Tech... Love of nursing!

I was a Hospital Corpsman for five years in the U.S. Navy and boy do I have some great stories! I don't want to go on and on about them, but geeze are they very close to Grey's Anatomy! ha! so, Everything from chest tubes, to cabages, iv's to central caths, IJ's to ICP's and then some... so, If you would like to read some, let me know...

but, you know what gets me the most... None of my five year experience is worth ANYTHING to Indiana... I'm sooo disappointed!

Yeah, the disappointment stings a little bit. But honestly: Would you Really want to go to Ivy Tech if the tuition wasn't $20 (or is it now up to $30) per credit hour?

no, it's the cheapest in the state right? I'm not from around here, I've only been here three years, and that's what i've heard. Where else can I go? This is the case of 'the poor get poorer and the rich get richer'. Even trying to get an education is a struggle. You have to have perfect grades or perfect credit, non of which is my case... (sigh) this is getting old. But, I must continue... there has to be a better way... there just has to be...:idea:

Had I stayed at Ivy, it would have been free, start to finish; such are the benefits of being "low income" (translation: "dead broke".) I had the grades, but wanted things I didn't find in their program - for one thing, I'm too old and mean to put up with a snotty professor. Push around some kid if you want; I don't play that game.

My advice? Find the place that can give you what you need, understanding it ain't gonna be cheap.

Umm Ivy Tech is $95 a credit hour and it will be going up for the 2010 school year.

I'm not going to throw you a pity party. It sucks that your experience doesn't get you anywhere, but you WANT to be a nurse? Then get the grades to do so. There are PLENTY of other students who are killing themselves to get amazing grades, and getting all As is completely possible. You will not find another program that is going to really expect anything less than maybe a 3.8 GPA wise for pre reqs. Retake the classes. Complaining about "perfect grades" isn't going to do anything for you. You should look into taking the IVY 101 class...gives you resources to control your own destiny rather than sit back and let something else control it.

I completely agree with you, however, I believe, and I'm basing this from what I've heard around me and in class, most of these students want to be nurses because of the pay, not for the love of nursing, they don't want to put the time in and get the experience and they talk so much garbage about how they won't work from the bottom up.

Thank you for not throwing me the pitty party- that wasn't what I was looking for. I was hoping someone out there knew of a program that could take my experience as a 5 year medic in the Navy for credit. I should have been clearer on my original post, rather than vent my frustrations. However, it surprises me that someone like you would bother to even answer a thread of someone who sounds like they are looking for some pitty.

I am retaking these classes this next semester. The competition is fierce, and I realize that, that wont stop me and though I love nursing, I love putting food on the table for my children better.

...but, just out of curiosity, if all the Nursing Schools charged the same thing per credit hour and had the same admission standards, would you still choose Ivy? Would anyone?

and I totally agree with you about people only in it for the money. I hope the apparent evaporation of jobs scares all the suckers and carpetbaggers off.

i'm sorry...i really wasn't trying to be rude. i have the tendency to not watch my tone online lol. i'm just being honest with you, to tell the truth. i'm really glad (sincerely) that you have faith. you need it! i'm just saying, that from my experience these past two years, those specific grades don't make it in. however, i did preface that in the other thread by also saying that it is dependent upon the applicant pool. i never said i am in. i'm waiting for my letter just like you, and i applied with what will hopefully be three as and one b. i highly doubt i will get in.

@is5512- most likely, yes. mainly because of the flexibility i have and the multiple campuses i can attend. i don't have any issues with the school though. with the exception of one prof, i've loved all of my teachers and thoroughly enjoy my classes. itcc also doesn't charge an app fee which was a big deal for me :) can't afford to spend $40 per school!

excelsior college is recognized by indiana's board of nursing, and excelsior will give you credit for your prior experience, not to mention they have special payment arrangements for military members (both active/non-active). i graduated from ivtcc in evansville in 2005, and i will be graduating from the rn program in california on may 25, 2010. you will get into the program, continue to have faith, the worst thing you could do is not try. everybody's experience is different including mine. just because a person makes straight a's doesn't mean they'll be successful in the program or a good nurse. some people excel in nursing theory but suck when it comes to clinical (applying theory with skills). keep your head up, think positive, and remember the only person that can keep you from reaching your dream is you. ;)

Wow! Thank you so much! It's great to hear someone like you! You truly have a heart! And I know that it takes a huge heart to be a nurse. A nurse goes through so much and the stress is everywhere- from the docotrs to the patient to their families and keeping a clear mind and a non critical heart is the best you can do!
