OHSU - Monmouth Fall 2013 students

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hello there!

I learned several weeks ago I have been accepted into the OHSU Monmouth BSN program that will start this Fall (2013). I am hoping to find and meet others in the same program so we don't have to wait until orientation. :)

Thanks,

NSWOU

Kvedaa,

I just wrote an effusive response to your private message you sent a MONTH ago and then...it was deleted because I am not allowed to send private messages unless I have contributed at least 15 times! Very frustrating, grrrr...

If only I had highlighted and copied!

Ah well. Let's see if I can remember it... First of all I want to apologize for taking so long to respond. I am in the habit of lurking without logging in so I never knew I had received a message from you. Also, I wanted to thank you for your insight. I have come to many of the same conclusions you have in regards to the likelihood of admission at Monmouth vs. PDX. Taking these into account and the fact that I currently reside in Salem, I have decided to apply to the Monmouth campus this coming winter. If I were lucky enough to get into OHSU-Monmouth or Chemeketa, then it would mean a lot less upheaval. My own area of interest is the OR, but I know that one must work up to that after one has become a nurse.

Your stats are impressive and intimidating! My own are not nearly so illustrious. I have no prior degree; I went to Chemeketa for a year to get my dental assisting certificate. I'm surprised that more dental assistants do not pursue nursing. Too many have dreams of going into hygiene, but the market is saturated for hygienists in most of Oregon. I am also surprised that my time as a dental assistant does not count towards the "direct patient care" that is required for many of the OCNE discretionary points. I have taken vitals on all of my patients, prepared instruments and assisted during invasive oral surgery procedures. It is my time assisting with oral surgery that has made me interested in working in an OR.

As far as school goes, I have a 4.0 GPA for my OCNE prerequisites, but it is slightly lower for Linfield and Walla Walla as they look at cumulative GPAs.

I know that you and the rest of your cohort are busy preparing for the upcoming term. I wish you all the best and I hope to join you this time next year!

Efda2rn- Im glad you received my message I wasn't sure! Thats a bummer and I agree that dental assistants and especially working in expanded practices should get some discretionary points, quite a few people in this years new cohorts don't have previous degrees, but with your OCNE GPA and doing well on your essay hopefully you'll be invited to the interview! Then your experience will be really valuable! I hope to see you on campus next year. Good luck!

I don't know if any of you still check these forums, but I was wondering what brands you all chose for your scrubs? Scrub Med is super durable, but also super expensive. I've found that several brands offer a "Hunter Green" option, but they look a bit lighter than the color presented by OHSU. How strict are they about shade differences?

Thanks!

I am still the only one who follows this I think because I am the MSNA President and OSNA Breakthrough to nursing director...you'll learn more about our Student Nurses Association if you choose OHSU-Monmouth. Most of use have Dickies, Greys Anatomy, Koi, Or Winkies (sp?). There is a bigger selection at the scrub shop in Lebanon than at Lancaster. I bought patches at Western in the book store but there is always a bunch of graduating seniors who sell patches and gentle used scrubs to new students at the beginning of the year. I have bought 4 pair and 2 lab coats (one extra lab coat and one extra pair of scrubs to leave in my car as back up). For a stethoscope I just bought the basic littmans its all you need in school unless you are hard of hearing. Any other questions feel free to shoot them my way.

Shades very but dark green is important...some of the guys have carhart and those are more forest green ;) but no one cares!

Hi Kvedaa,

How would we locate graduates who want to sell their books/patches/scrubs?

Thanks!
