OHSU ABSN to FNP 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey all!

Long time lurker, but now that the application deadline has passed, I feel comfortable finally starting a post.

Just curious to hear who else applied to this program. It's fascinating to me to hear about people's different experiences, stats, expectations, etc. I'm also wondering what other programs people might've applied to? I got my submission in for the Portland ABSN program as well.

Best of luck to everyone! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and perspectives.

Yeah, I'd be REALLY hard pressed to commit to any particular specialty without being 100% sure, which is why there are probably less applications. I'm feeling the exact same way at the moment though - 6% odds are NOT good, which is sad because they're still better than the ~4% chance for the ABSN alone. Admissions told me they'd be sending out invites this week too, but I haven't heard anything, so I'm naturally on edge. Wonder if they were being honest?

I didn't know about the 4% for the ASBN! Though that makes sense given the amount of applications received. I would imagine we will hear back next week or even the week after. I haven't heard of them sending out invites anymore than 10-12 days before the interviews, but hey, we could be pleasantly surprised. I'm wondering how they will offer spots to those of us that are still taking pre-reqs. Have you heard anything about that? I'm taking Microbiology this term, which is the last pre-req that I need. I've heard that sometimes they offer conditional acceptance, which will depend on what grades you get, but I wonder if that's true?

Don't quote me 100% because I'm trying to remember numbers from a September information session, but I'm like 95% sure they said they got about 700 or 750 applicants last year for ABSN and there are only 32 Portland spots and 32 more in Ashland. I don't remember them saying whether those 700 were between both programs or just Portland, so odds may be a bit better? I was surprised to hear that they'd send them out this week because that's like two weeks in advance, which is kind of unheard of at this point, but have an email directly from the admissions rep who emailed out reminding us that FNP applications were due soon saying they'll be sending out invites this week. So they're either moving faster for our program or just lied to get me off their back. I don't know whether or not pre-reqs still in progress count against you, though I don't think so. They will offer conditional acceptance though, assuming you pass, because otherwise people just wouldn't be able to apply until they'd finished pre-reqs. I have micro and A&P III next quarter and am currently in two classes, so I really hope it doesn't count against us. I mean, I have a 4.0 in pre-reqs so far and I hope that counts for something...

It would make sense that the 700 is just Portland alone, which is crazy. I wish I was able to go to an info session. With work and school I just couldn't swing it. Micro is really fun, you'll like it! My pre-req GPA is not that high, I'm an A/B student. But I'm hoping my work experience and letters of recommendation will help boost my chances. I hate that schools focus so much on GPA, but I with a 4.0 there is no reason that you wouldn't get an interview.

Honestly, you didn't miss a whole lot in the info sessions... It would unfortunately make sense, but I'm trying to live in a state of delusion where that's divided between the two, lots of people who applied would be automatically disqualified because their grades just aren't close enough to the average accepted GPA, plenty of people who get in also get into other programs and choose those, etc. Hah, I know none of that is the case and is kind of mean, but it somehow makes me feel a little bit more hopeful. I have a 4.0 for pre-reqs (A&P I, Genetics, Stats, Human Development), 3.81 overall per NursingCAS, a hard science degree I created myself, good letters of rec, and have worked for a low-income, vulnerable population STD clinic for the last 14 months, all of which I want to believe is helpful and could get me at least an interview. That being said, there are so many people who have just absolutely stellar resumes and tons of volunteer work and way better grades or are reapplying or completed with pre-reqs, etc., so it honestly wouldn't shock me if I didn't get an interview. Unfortunately :/ You sound like you've got a lot going for you even in terms of a grades, so I bet you get an interview.

It seems like they've been doing them slightly further out this year (like a full week) so I think you should be good. I'm about 99% sure that they don't do Skype or phone interviews though, given the fact there is also a proctored essay you have to complete (at least there has been in the past). The fact a lot of people may not be able to make it is super frustrating but is also probably just another way of weeding people out. Means less applications for them to sift through at the end.

Is this proctored essay for the Direct Entry program? I haven't heard anything about it before. Also, if you applied to the Direct Entry to DNP, they required a writing sample, so I find it odd that they would also make you do a proctored essay.

I'm like 97% positive I've heard about it for direct entry, but I suppose it's possible it's just the ABSN? Either way, seems weird to have it for some candidates and not others.

Has anyone heard anything about FNP interviews? Admissions told me invites would be going out this week, and I'm curious if they actually meant that.

Nothing over here yet!

I wonder if they were just telling me that so I wouldn't email about it in the future? Hmm...

I got my interview email today. No mention of an essay, as I am out of state I have the option to do online interview which really helps!

Interview invite for FNP program? Congrats!

That is definitely true! I'm just finishing my undergrad in Public Health, so in my mind I'm thinking that if I don't get in this year it won't be such a bad thing. I think that's why I've been a little less stressed about being selected for an interview. With that being said, it'd be SO NICE to get all of my schooling out of the way because I feel like it would be so hard to get back in the groove of school after a long break.
