OHSU ABSN 2013 Applicants

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

I didn't see a thread.....although it is quite early yet for some to be thinking about the upcoming application session. I am a senior at Marylhurst/PCC, will be graduating Spring 2013 and applying to OHSU, Duke, and John Hopkins this Fall.

Anyone current students that have advice? Anyone who just applied have any tips for the application? Anyone else applying?

Good Luck to those taking Summer courses!

@reginaphalange9, I obviously can't speak for everyone on this board, but I believe there is a very wide range of healthcare experience levels across all applicants. I for one did not have very much experience prior to applying - I did some volunteering at the UW Medical Center and had some shadowing opportunities with nurses from the Nurse Family Partnership and Indian Health Services.

I focused mainly on these shadowing experiences in my essay, how they influenced what kind of nurse I want to become, and how OHSU would help me to achieve that goal. However, I also used quite a bit of space to discuss my experiences as a student-athlete at UW, the life skills that I developed in that time, and how I will pull from those experiences in my nursing career.

People apply to this program from all walks of life, and while those who have more healthcare experience will obviously benefit greatly (I am still trying to do as much as I can before school starts!), when it comes down to it we are all going to nursing school because none of us are nurses yet!

For the program I think they are looking for how you are going to use your life experience in your practice as a nurse. There are people from all walks of life that apply, even some who are changing careers and have little to know healthcare experience. These where my stats:

I have my B.S. Sociology from Portland State, and have completed ALL prereqs.

My application G.P.A. was 3.91

I have 2000+ hours as a CNA

The essay is key, take your time and answer it thoroughly. I can't wait for fall, it took me 6 years of school and experience to get into this program (although I only applied to OHSU once). Don't give up, YOU GOT IT!

Can any current or former students speak to the quality of clinical placements?

One big factor in OHSU's favor for me in making my decision is the fact that OHSU is an academic hospital, which usually means that the patients are typically higher acuity and have more complex needs than those at community hospitals.

Do you feel like you are reaping the benefits of having your clinicals in this environment? How are your clinical professors and preceptors?

(Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not talk about it publicly.)

There is a great thread about this by a previous student. I don't have the exact link but it's got a similar title to this one from a couple of years ago. She goes into great detail

Thanks jc317! I think I've read the threads for the last 3 years and just went back to check again, but I didn't see one that went in to great depth about the quality of the clinical experiences. If you come across it again, please do share. Thanks again!

It might be this one... https://allnurses.com/oregon-state-nursing/ohsu-vs-linfield-502766.html

If that link doesn't work, the thread name is "OHSU vs. Linfield accelerated BSN- thoughts?"

There is a thorough post about 5 responses in (from a poster named sarabear44) that goes through the OHSU ABSN program life. Not sure if this is the one that jc317 meant, but throwing it out there!

Thanks arae! This is exactly what I was looking for!

May 1st is just a few days away ... fellow wait-listers hopefully that means good news for us soon ... waiting is driving me bonkers!! :wacky:

When I called to ask about transcripts, the woman told me that since May 1st is the date their decisions need to be postmarked, the actual date of when they know who's accepting/declining is actually a bit later. She said you can safely assume they will have all their responses by May 8. So we may have a bit longer to wait :( I'm going pretty nuts, too, though! I wasn't nearly this nervous before my waitlist letter came. I had pretty much accepted I wouldn't be getting in this year so I really hardly thought about it. Now that I know I actually have a decent shot, I am a nervous wreck!!!

That is the thread I meant :)

I too am going a little nuts not knowing. I've never lived in Portland or any city that big and want to make plans for moving if I get in. Hoping we know soon!!

Keeping fingers crossed for you. Make sure to join the Fb group if you get in, lots of helpful info! Portland doesn't feel nearly as big as it is :)
