Hey! I was hoping to start a thread consisting of summer 2017 applicants to Ohio State's Graduate Entry program. I just finalized my application and submitted last Friday! Well before the deadline in October so I'm hoping that helps. I guess you can say I'm an overly proactive type of person lol. Blessing and a curse. But I've completed all pre-reqs except Microbiology..... which I'm in right now until December. My GPA isn't strong at all 3.2. I'll be taking the GRE in September so I'm pretty much dedicating a lot of my time to studying for that...
Anyways, I hope to meet more people who applied/will apply this year for next summer :)
Crunch time starts now!
SUPER NERVOUS, BUT SO EXCITED!!
Just requested to join the FB Group!
@Moroccan1994 I think the personal statement is huge and what really helped me get in. I spent so much time on it and revised it for months. It ended up being a full 3 pages single-spaced so I definitely had a lot to say lol. I would suggest that you have friends and people you trust review it and be completely honest with you. I was told my first copy was wrong in all sorts of ways and I needed to change a lot but when I put my pride aside and made those changes it worked! Other than that, I had a 3.6 cum GPA (B.S. Psych major, Public Health minor) and am in the Honors Program currently at OSU. I am a STNA and work PRN at a nursing home. I had a nursing internship at the Cleveland Clinic and I've shadowed numerous nurses and nurse practitioners in all sorts of settings, outlining those experiences in my personal statement. I also have a lot of volunteer work and leadership roles at OSU and had completed all of my prerequisites with A's and B's in them. I understand how you feel though. I attended 2 overview sessions and was a nervous wreck applying and read these discussion boards religiously but really your passion for nursing drives everyrhing else so just make sure you highlight that and you can do it. :)
I graduated 20 years ago with a bachelor's in biology, minor in chemistry and an associates in equine science. I worked for 20 years as a vet assistant and as a buyer for a catalog. My GPA when I left school was a 3.02 and I had 3 prereqs done and just finished up the other 2. I would say go to the open houses and ask questions. They said the way the based their decisions was 25% of each of the following: cumulative GPA, GPA for pre-reqs, references and personal statement. I made sure my personal statement was personal and from the heart and feel like that's what helped get me in. Plus the fact that I have had a lot of life experience and I feel like that helps. I work at osu now as a a unit clerk but no previous human health care experience. I am a mother of two and really played on that as well in my personal statement. As far as references go since I had been out of school for awhile I used a charge nurse here at the hospital, my nurse Manger that was in charge of the floor I work on and my previous boss from my buying job that I worked with for 10 years. After I turned in my application I still went to the info session to get my face in front of who was in charge of the program i applied for
Wow guys I really appreciate how honest and open everyone has been. Does anyone here plan on working while in the program? If so, how many hours a week? I know a single mom in the program who is working fulltime, and I know another girl who isn't a mom but is working 30 hours a week. and how about financial aid. Are the majority of you going to fund your education through loans or what are some ideas for funding?
I got into the psych program! My degree was a bachelor of science in psychology from OSU from 2015. I had a cum GPA of 3.5 and all my pre reqs done (all A's and B's) when I applied. I have my CNA license, did research for 3 years in a social psychology lab while at OSU, currently work as an optometric technician, and was a TA for microbiology lab this past semester.
But I'd agree with everyone else, just focus on making your personal statement stand out as much as you can to really showcase why you should be in the program. And one tip one of the advisors gave me was for your letters of rec, get 3 people that really know how you are academically such as professors or clinical instructors rather than people in the work force. Hope that helps a bit and good luck :)
