Ohio RN to BSN starting August 2013

Nursing Students Ohio University

Published

I am starting this program in August. I am a busy father/husband and was looking for advice to get ahead. Can anyone tell me any reading or anything I can start now so I don't fall behind once class starts? I have just received my acceptance letter and am yet to register for classes. I'm excited to be getting started. After 4 years of ICU nursing I'm ready to advance my career.

I am also curious if anyone on here will be starting with me.

penneflower, I know it can be aggravating. It took almost 3 months for them to do my DARS so have patience, we all had the same problem. Go to this link, I think you have to activate your user I.D. and password. Get on the FB site, it is a wealth of info also.

Are you in the Academic Outreach or BSN completion program, go to this link Ohio University RN-to-BSN Knowledge Center and go to the program you are in, and they will have course offerings.

Once in catmail I changed my password to something I would remember.

annrn64, the first course is the worst and learning APA. Never did it and didn't even know what the heck it was! The first course is tough but once you get the hang of APA is alright. I use PERRLA and it is a godsend.

Thanks I finally figured out I don't have a catmail yet that is why I couldn't access it. Lol. I enrolled for 4510 fall 2 and gerontology fall 3. I'm ready to get going :)

Hello :) Can anyone give me advice on this program? I am graduating with my ADN in 17 weeks (YAY!) and am trying to be proactive about where I plan to continue my education! OU seems to offer what I am looking for.

Can anyone give me an estimate how long the RN-BSN is in duration? What about overall/ballpark cost?

The school that I am attending at the moment, received the CCNE accreditation for their BSN, and for already current students it is 180.00 a credit hour... lasting an average of 15 months in duration. OU on the other hand has an MSN program so in my thoughts--> transferring to their MSN program 'in house' if you will- would be easier than coming from another institution.

Any help is much appreciated!!!

There are too many variables to give you any exact information. First, the length of the program depends on how many classes you actually need and how many you take at a time.

Next, the cost can vary depending on whether you are in the program linked with your employer or the bachelor completion completion program. Per credit hour for academic outreach is roughly $240.

If you are not working, many people have said the program is difficult due to being asked to use examples or draw from experience. As far as the MSN, if you don't live in Ohio or one of the few states that approves the program, you won't be accepted no matter where you did your undergrad.

I'm not trying to encourage or discourage you either way. I think it is important to have all of the facts first. I recommend calling and asking about tuition rates and whether you live where you could be accepted into the MSN program. You will have to apply and have your transcripts reviewed to tell you exactly what classes you need and some of us were well into the program before we had the final answers.

Good luck to you in completing your ADN and passing boards.

I am also new to the program this fall. One of the threads I read talks about a mandatory online math placement test for students who never took ACT/SAT tests. Is this true?

I have heard nothing about that and don't think anybody I know that has taken it.

I know ShantheRN and a lot of people supporting each other! Glad to help!

Hi everybody...I will start NRSE 4510 on Monday through OU. I am both nervous & excited at the same time...that would be great if we could all form a support network to help each other through this journey. I have been an RN for 10 years...I'm very nervous about online classes, we will see how it goes. I have all my books, trying to review APA format (will probably end up purchasing PERRLA), & just trying to have a positive outlook on going back to school. Good Luck to everyone & I hope we can get through this!!

Hi BethMO3! I was nervous too and started in Feb. I had been out of school for over 30 years and never did APA nor knew what it was! I was nervous as heck but have gotten into the swing of things and have done well. This site and the FB site have been loads of help for me and everyone has been very supportive. Just holler! We have all been where you are! Good luck! You will do fine! I did purchase PERRLA and it was a lifesaver!

Thanks woodsyny!! I appreciate the encouraging words...30 years is a long time to be out of school, and that is great that you are moving right along!! Thanks again...i will eventually holler sooner or later!
