Officially Pre-Nursing Student!

Published

Quite the switch from Psych, I think! Going to make it official tomorrow morning- it is bittersweet for me. Psych has been my life for 2 years- even got accepted into the International Honor Society in Psychology in 2 years, versus the typical 3-4!

But.... I will take Anatomy, 2 perspectives, mathematical modeling, and us history this summer, then Anatomy 2, Pathophysiology, Microbiology, and American government in the Fall, in hopes of getting in in the Spring for 2011.

HOWEVER, I am going to hope to be a transient student at a tech college here to get Micro without the need to take the Chemistry sequence- if not, it will put me back a semester...but, keep your fingers crossed!

How bad is Anatomy and the other sciences?!

My name is Bethany, btw. And I attend Valdosta State University ;)

all science courses are very challenging....... especially micro and anatomy. Try to get as high grade as possible in anatomy and micro...

Hey Bethany, I was a psych major too but, unlike you, I didn't have the guts to switch majors so I got a degree I didn't really want and then had to start fresh after graduation. A lot of nursing pre reqs are psych classes (developmental, lifespan, and/or abnormal psych) so your background will help with. I found A&P to be really hard, but I took that before I took intro to biology which was a mistake. I loved loved loved micro and hated chem. Good luck!

Anatomy is pretty hard! But If you take the time everyday after class (both lab, adn lecture) to review, then it becomes much easier and it's not so hard when it comes to the test. I made a lot of Notecards for Lecture (usually after every class, I would sit and make a few) Then Reviewed those whenever I got a chance. For Lab, I printed out, and made copies of all the diagrams and parts of the body and practiced labeling them a couple times a week. I got a high A, in both classes and worked full time, so You can do it, It is challenging, but can be really interesting too. Good Luck let me know if you need any help or hints! (PS, I was a Psych Minor- I love the science classes much better!)

I found the labs for science classes incredibly easy, alot of straight memorizing...so if you have a good memory or a good way to help you memorize (i used lots of little sayings and made up my own acronyms). I did struggle with the lecture piece until I took the time to actually understand the material and not just try to memorize it. I really find the sciences so fascinating that not only did I take the A&P I&II but now I am taking cadaver anatomy just for fun, I won't start nursing til fall. :) You will do great!! Congrats on your decision and good luck!!

Hello Bethany,

I also attend VSU and am a Pre-Nursing student. I've applied for Fall 2010 and hope to hear back from them soon! I just transferred to VSU so I can't tell you anything about their A&P classes, but I am currently taking Chemistry II, Pathophysiology, and Microbiology. I would choose my professors carefully if I were you; I had no choice but to take the last spot in the last available classes because I had just transferred... The Microbiology teacher I am taking now is probably not as bad as everyone has made them out to be though, but we've just taken the first exam and I will find out how I did tomorrow. Chemistry II is going well for me so far, I believe, but you said you will hopefully be able to avoid taking that. Pathophysiology has been A LOT of work. :sstrs: I earned an A.S. in Early Childhood Education and an A.S. in Psychology at Darton before coming here; psych to nursing doesn't sound like such a big leap now, does it? Good luck and I hope we both make it in! :anpom:

Sincerely,

Michelle

Michelle- who would you take for the Pathophysiology course? I am taking it online in the Fall... do you like that it is offered only online? I really like to go to class to learn, so I have never had an online course before...

Also, what EXACTLY do you study in Patho? Stupid question, no?

I hope you make it in, as well! How did your TEAS go?

Bethany,

Our class basically has to learn it all on our own (review the really long modules and every site it links to, then take an exam each week--one for each module, and do at least 6 out of 16 lengthy discussions). I loved taking online classes before this one; I really wish this one had been in a classroom. It's so much information to try to absorb on your own.

I am renting my Patho book from Chegg.com; it was cheaper for me and easier to do then buying/selling. :) This is my first experience with Chegg, but so far it has been a very positive one.

These are our modules: Module 01: Genes and Genetic Diseases, Module 02: Altered Cellular and Tissue Biology, Module 03: Fluids and Electrolytes, Acids and Bases, Module 04: Innate Defenses: Inflammation, Module 05: Adaptive Immunity, Module 06: Hypersensitivities, Infection, and Immune Deficiencies, Module 07: Biology of Cancer and Tumor Spread, Module 08: Alterations of Neurologic Function, Module 09: Alterations of Hormonal Alterations, Module 10: Alterations of Hematologic Function, Module 11: Alterations of Cardiovascular Function, Module 12: Alterations of Pulmonary Function, Module 13: Alterations of Renal and Urinary Tract Function, Module 14: Alterations of the Reproductive Systems, Module 15: Alterations of Digestive Function, Module 16: Alterations of Musculoskeletal Function

I did really well on the TEAS actually. You only have to do better than the national average to pass and that's all they ask you to do is pass. After that, they base admission off your certification GPA.

Bethany,

I got my acceptance letter for Fall 2010 today! Again, good luck to you! :)
