Offered 3 Nurse Externship Positions...Dont know which one to pick!

Published

Hi Everyone!

I'm looking for a little bit of advice....I've recently been offered 3 nurse externship positions for this summer. One is on a busy cardiac telemetry unit, another one is on a neuro unit and the last one is on a surgical unit. I'm having a bit of a dilemma because all three of these positions are great opportunities for me where I know I will be able to learn a lot!

I graduate from nursing school in one year. I know that I am interested in working in a fast paced environment and am leaning towards eventually becoming an emergency room nurse but am still unsure. Does anyone have any advice or feedback on what I should do from your own personal experiences? Any comment is appreciated! :)

Specializes in Ambulatory Case Management, Clinic, Psychiatry.

are you interested in more than one of these areas than the others?

any significant difference in pay, benefits, travel distance, culture, or shift?

all other things being equal, tele would prob be best for ed exp

Specializes in ED, Critical care, & Education.

Congratulations!! That is AMAZING that you have three offers.

ED nurse here....if you hope to head toward working in the ED, I suspect you would get great experience on the Tele unit. Neuro would be awesome too, but do you think you will like this population? Surgical will likely not give you the type of patients you would see in the ED (not too common to get post op complications in the ED as they have a surgeon to follow up with). Any experience will certainly serve you well that's for sure. Tough decision. Follow your heart.

Thank you both for the comments! All three are at the same hospital which means same pay, benefits, and travel, etc. So far, I think I am leaning towards the cardiac or neuro floor but am still undecided. I will keep both of your comments in mind! :)

Tough decision; I've had to turn down really good opportunities before when I got multiple offers like that so I know how you feel. I tend to agree with the others, cardiac tele is probably the most relevant experience for moving into the emergency department..good luck!

I would suggest Tele/Cardiac. Learning telemetry would be good for emerg and is something you probably wouldn't get to do much of in nursing school .
