Hello everyone,
I bought an online prep NCLEX course and am going over questions. I just bumped into an odd question and I was wondering if the answer to this question was right:
The nurse is providing diet instruction to the parents of a child with cystic fibrosis. The nurse would emphasize that the diet should follow which of the following guidelines?
A.Sodium-restricted
B.High-fat, high-calorie foods
C.Skim milk and low-fat dairy products
D.Restricted calorie
The course said B was the right answer but I thought that cystic fibrosis patients needed a low fat diet. I am slightly confused.
Thanks for your insight!

B. Is right, I learned cystic fibrosis diet is high calorie, high protein. A good way to see if the patient is improving is if they are gaining weight.
I think lol correct me if wrong someone. Nclex in 2 days! Lol

its B. I just bumped into a question like that as well. I think the reasoning behind it is that they need more of it because their bodies arent absorbing what they need....

What is your rationale that cystic fibrosis patients need a low fat diet?

They certainly don't need a low calorie diet. CF patients have trouble absorbing nutrients.

b/c their pancreas can't produce the enzymes necessary to digest a lot of the food they eat. CF does not just effect the lungs.

High fat for CF is correct. You’re probably thinking of pancreatitis which requires a low fat diet.

I disagree on option B.
high protein, high calories and low fat is the answer if that option was given

However, if you look at all the other options, B is the BEST choice given the others. For the NCLEX you are selecting the best one, not what might be done in the real world. CF patients need high fat, high protein, high calorie. If you look at all of the other options, none of the others would fit.
