Hi everyone! Okay so I decided to make a seperate thread for those of us seeing what our options are because we got the dreaded letter from OCC. It was getting hard to filter out the information pertinent to us in the general OCC thread.
I just want to tell everyone not to give up.
I had a meeting with a counselor yesterday, who basically assured me that any drastic changes made to OCC nursing admission policy could NOT be implemented in the very next admission cycle. He said that he had been a counselor for over 16 years, and the last time they made a drastic change (like from waitlist to gpa based) they grandfathered in everybody who would have been 'caught up' in the transition.
I had a 3.824 gpa. I had three classes that were not straight A's (An A- in both american government and english composition two, as well as the dreaded B in A&P 1). I am retaking all three and am going to seriousely aim for all A's. The gpa cutoff is gonna be a 3.9 something and I don't want to have to worry about not getting in again. I am going to do my best to get all A's.
I met with the counselor to discuss my options and see what to do at this point. I was considering going LPN but I don't think i'm going to do that anymore because my biggest aim is to get my RN as soon as possible. The LPN to RN transition program is only offerred every even year. What this means for us? If I were, for example to start the LPN program in January of 2012, it would be over in like March of 2013. Then I couldn't start the transition program until like July of 2014. Then I wouldn't be done with the transition program and have my RN until December of 2015! This versus the ADN RN program, which would start in the Fall of 2012 and finish in like early May of 2014.
Good luck to all of those still trying! We can't give up!!!!!
Congrats everyone! Kristi, I just recv'd the book on fundamentals you recommended. Wow, talk about light reading (just kidding). Thanks for the info on it - I think it will help me. I also bought Saunders NCLEX review (as so many current OCC ADN students recommended it) and Straight A's in Med-Surg --- might as well spread out the pocket pain of purchasing all these resources.
The Nursing Fundementals book is ridiculuosly simplified, but I just wanted something kind of easy like that so I can enjoy my remaining free time! I was thinking about checking out the NCLEX review book though... I have done some NCLEX review questions online too.
Hi Becky, Wow! You are a brave soul taking this program on with such young ones. I have 2 kids, ages 8 & 7. I worry about how much time I will be able to spend with them once fall hits, whether or not I'll be able to make it to sporting events, choir concerts, brownie mtgs, ect. My husband travels alot for work but fortunately my mom is retiring and has volunteered to be our live-in "nanny". I hope you have lots of family support as well.
I think you guys are brave to do the program with young kids too. I hear it's hard but "do-able." Do any of you have to work also? I don't have any kids but will have to work fulltime and am really nervous about it. All of the other PCA's I work with who are in the program work part time or contingent and keep cutting back more and more of their hours.
i also have 2 kids, ages 1 and 4. i will also be working midnights while in the program, most likely two 12 hour shifts per week. i will be studying on my breaks, and when it is slow at work. i know quite a few people that are in the program at occ now that are in similar situations and they are just fine. one girl even works full-time midnights and has kids. the key to everything i've been told is relentless discipline and time management. go in knowing you are going to be socially unavailable for 2 years and put the guilt aside. because once we are nurses, we will have solid, good paying jobs that we love and that by going through all of this, our familys lives will better as well. we have to make sure our spouses are 100 percent on board with picking up the slack at home and have plans a, b, AND c in check in regards to child care at the drop of a dime because they sometimes dont announce the clinical schedule until DAYS before it starts.
WE CAN DO THIS !!! we have worked so hard to get in and i feel that the battle is half over. i'm glad that we're starting to introduce ourselves now because we will rely on each other alot come fall!!
