Obtaining RN after MPH degree

Published

Would obtaining a RN license after obtaining a Master in Public Health degree very marketable? I know that many people get BSN than MPH, but would the job market be more open for individuals just graduating with a Rn (not BSN) be more open?

I would guess that the job market might be more limited in your case. Employers might look your MPH as over-qualifying you for an RN position. They also might be suspicious that you are "settling" for a nursing position and would jump ship at the first opportunity to use your MPH.

We have several nurses with MPH I have an MAT. If you have a BSN and experience in the healthcare field at all, you are going to be more marketable than a new grad with no experience. Any organization worth its salt is going to value education not penalize you for having it. It has no impact on pay, so it would not make you "overqualified".

I think it would make you make you much more marketable, especially for opportunities in public and community health. I don't think it will make you appear overqualified since an MPH is not a clinical degree. Best of luck to you!

A BSN with an MPH would probably have opportunities in the public health sector.... ADN, not so much. An MPH would not have much value for a new grad seeking work in acute care.
