ob-gyn OR

Specialties Operating Room

Published

Hi, I´m new here and wanted to ask if anyone here works in an ob-gyn OR unit. If anyone has experience in that particular field of perioperative nursing it would be great if she/he could share some information on how it´s like, pros and cons.

Thanks

Hi...Is there a height requirement for nurses in the OR? I am 4'11 and have heard different things. I am a nursing student and want to go in this area (or wound care), but I dont want my height to be a disadvantage. Thanks.

No height requirements that i'm aware of.

We have a couple of docs that use ortho boots (shoe covers) because they irrigate like there is no tomorrow. A lot comes over the sides of the patient and into your shoes. I have started wearing the ortho boots as well, it helps!

Yeah, those boots are awesome! Gimme ortho anyday.

I like the boots for C-sections and ACL reconstructions.

Obstetrics is very unpredictable and full of drama. Most of our anaesthesiologist's who "wants a life", often asks that they not be rostered for the Obstetric OR. That's how unnerving it could be at times. Each case is always different. There is usually heaps of blood involved when doing these surgeries. Everything could be working okay and in just minutes all hell can break loose. The scary thing is that you are dealing with 2 lives. So quick action from the team is always a must.

It can be highly gratifying because you see the start of life but you also have to be prepared for the worse as maternal and fetal deaths happen sometimes.

As with everything, experience and a good team are your best allies. We are lucky here in our unit that RNs rotate in circulating, scrubbing, assisting, anaesthetics and recovery. So we just slot in anywhere. That for me is the complete experience of OR nursing not just circulating. It is a shame that not a lot of RNs can do these things now.

I tuck a garbage bag under the pt.'s butt when in lithotomy. That way I can drop prep sponges right into the bag and the mess is directed there too. The bed and floor stays clean. :)
