What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

I once took care of a patient with the first name "Kermit". Yep, that was his legal name.

I went to high school with a boy named Kermit. He came along a few years before "Sesame Street".

I've also seen the names Grover and Oscar.

My guess is that the "Sesame Street" people picked uncommon names on purpose.

About 10 years ago, my local paper had a multi-day series on poverty in Western Massachusetts. One of the families profiled was the Pickup family. Dad was dead, Mom was raising 5 kids on welfare. The middle kid, an 11-year-old boy who was in jail for some reason, was named Chevy Van.

New Hampshire used to have a senator named Dick Sweatt.

My sister attended middle school with a boy named Harry Crumdick.

I used to work with a guy named Hurl. Worse, he was Hurl III, meaning his father and grandfather were named Hurl.

I didnt actually see this, it happened a long time before I came to work. But a nurse in WBN told me one time a mother looked at the crib card and saw Sim e Fe (Similac with Iron). She was very contemplative and didnt say much for part of the day. Then she told the nurse, "I was pretty upset at first that you named my baby for me but after I kept saying that name over and over in my head it is so pretty. Her name is going to be Sim e Fe.' She pronounced this Simmy Fay.

We also had twins in the NICU about a year ago named Javier (pronounced Zavier) and Xavier (with the X sound). The mother was very upset when people pronounced Javier with an H sound (as one would exept it to sound). When the baby was 2 months old she changed the name to be spelled Zavier. But no one had the heart to tell her that Zavier and Xavier is pretty much the same name with 2 different ways to pronounce it. Its like naming your children Ahna and Anna. Oh well.

Another name that just makes you shake your head a little was a baby whose last name was Blizzard. Her parents named the poor child Stormy Snow Blizzard.

I worked in a field once where I saw hundreds of files on a daily basis; thus, hundreds of various names. The best I've ever seen was a woman named LaBia. I can only assume it was pronounced "La-Bee-uh" but still.....

Labia? Really? Spelled just the same as that part?

I can't even imagine the ridicule.

I work in a neonatal unit and so tend to come across a lot of unusual names.....The ones that stick out in my mind are:

Hezbollah

Kokiana (coke and marijuana) hhmmm..i wonder if this is the reason we were born 4 months early?

Nevaeh ( Heaven backwards)

I am never suprised anymore.....

I know somebody named "Windows", I don't know how her mom came up with that name, for sure Bill Gates wasn't known the day she was born!

Had an EMS call a few years back with a teen aged girl named Corian.

Yep, just like the countertops. Mom liked the sound. And it is a variant of Cory, which people have at least heard of.

Next kid of mine is getting named Formica!
