i do agree with you in a sort. but many of the people they comment about people that are capable of having 3 children at 23, they dont look at occupation only gravida. i too am capable but they wouldnt see it as that. they would see my age and then number of children that i have.. that makes me mad!

Of course jaxm0mma, you are entitled to your feelings.

But in the same way that you are saying age is not a valid indicator to ability to bear and raise children, neither is occupation. There are a multitude of factors, socioenconomical, emotional, familial, etc. All of which are just not as stable with a 23 year old. Just makes our work a little harder, whether there is a ring on a fingeror a well paying job to return to.

I think they look at more than gravida. It's the irresponsible moms most nurses vent about, not happily married, financially stable, well educated 23 year olds with 3 kids.

that is exactly it FERGUS! I see no problem with educated people at young ages having lots of children if they coose to do it. as long as they can care for them properly and pay for them. but to me a 23 yr old preg with 3rd 4th or 5th child unemployed on medicaid usually unmarried and on welfare does not need to be preg again because they can not physically or monitarily care and provide for their children.

so JAXMOMMA I do not see where you should take it personally, we do not make fun of patients. and I would be glad to work with you or to be your nurse anytime. and i promise not to make fun of you:)

but maybe after you work in this area for a while you will see what i mean. after you see 12 and 13 yr olds giving birth 23 yr olds giving birth to 7th baby, the crack babies etc, maybe you will understand that all is not so fun and games in the real L&D world all the time. it can be very frustrating and sometimes we just need to vent. venting is not harmful as long as you treat your patients right. which i always do, I baby them all:).
