I got the extern job!!

  1. I'm so excited, they just called and I got the OB extern position!! It's the area I want to work at the hospital I want to work at!! I've been applying for extern positions for four months now without any luck, but that's okay, 'cause now I've got the area I want. What's great is that they really like you to extern there, then work as a new grad and then as an RN, so it's basically a road into OB that would've been hard to get otherwise! So thanks for all of your support, I'm sure I'll be a regular on here now!!

Congrats!!! I also am externing and wanted an OB position, but there were none available so I'm in Ortho/observation. Good luck and I hope you get a great preceptor because that makes all the difference in the world! Have a great new year!

    hey,,,what is an EXTERN NURSE????

It's where you have a preceptor, but you can act as the nurse with their supervision. It's a really great was to help transition from student to nurse!!

P.S. Hospitals call them different things too, for example, I'm an SNI (student nurse intern) and there are other names as well, but as far as I know, they're the same thing. Your status in the nursing program determines what you're allowed to do on the floor.

We do this at my hospital but I have never heard of interviewing for one and we call it a preceptorship rather than externship. My boss or one of the instructors just asks one of us if we will do it.

BTW, I used to live in Gilbert, AZ some years ago. I bet it's changed a lot since then.
