Oakland University Accelerated Nursing May 2010 Cohort

Published

Hi,

Is anyone on here applying to Oakland University for May 2010? I just applied and will be contacted for an interview soon.

Please post if you are applying, have been admitted, have had an interview etc.

Thanks :)

Hey Chris,

Are you a new member? You have to make like 15 posts or something before you can send PMs. Yay I'm glad the interview went well! I really like the ladies at OU. UM and Eastern have been a pain the ass. I had to wait 5 months to find out that I was wait listed at UM. OU would be my first choice if they weren't so far away, but at this point, I'm ready for a nursing career. Even if it means moving and commuting. OU has been fast and very efficient, something I really appreciate!!!!

Yay for proposing, hopefully she doesn't read allnurses ;) It'd be cool to be in the same class. I'm thinking about starting a FB group...maybe I will this weekend....would you guys join? Any takers?

Hey guys,

I started a private Facebook group:

Oakland University Accelerated Nursing Class of May 2011

Invite yourselves to join if you wish and I'll add you :)

wannabeanurse84 where are getting certified for phlebotomy? i was thinking about taking the CNA program through macomb, but i am not really sure it is worth it. i heard from a lot of people that the only jobs you can get are usually in retirement facilities. i would really like to get some medical experience before starting the nursing program, but i am unsure of what to do. the volunteering in honduras sounds like an amazing experience. how did you get involved with that?

Hi,

I'm getting certified in phlebotomy and received my CNA at Washtenaw Community College. Yeah I'm not sure if I'll work doing either, but I thought the experience of both classes was worth it. I already do some CNA stuff working with specials needs children and adults, deal with seizures, hook up feeding tubes, do changings. My phlebotomy course has been amazing because I seriously didn't realize how nervous I would be sticking someone for the first time. Now I'll stick anyone lol :) Not everyone gets blood in class everytime, it actually takes awhile if you have someone with hard veins to learn how to do it proficiently. You really have to do it all the time. It'll definitely make nursing school easier, especially learning how to do IV's. CNA was good too, you learn how to take blood pressure, do bedpans, empty urinary drainage bag. We had a week of clinicals in that course in the nursing home. I thought it was great experience working under a nurse in a clinical environment. All of it will definitely make nursing school (especially since we are going through a fast paced one) much more easier!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I went to Honduras during my undergrad at UM. It was amazing :)

hey there wannabeanurse84! how did you prepare yourself for the questions they asked you in the interview? did you spend a long time with the interviewers? hope to hear from ya

Hey berns10,

I thought I could give you some information on my interview. I was first asked to wirte a paragraph about a nursing situation, there is technically no correct answer just show that you can support your decision. I was then interviewed for about 25 minutes and asked general questions about what i think nursing is and what I plan to achieve with a career in nursing. The interviewers were very nice and down to earth, they are very relaxed and want you to be as well. I just recieved an email 3 days ago telling me that I had been accepted. Good luck and feel free to ask me anything else. I'm sure wannabenurse will respond soon, she helped me a lot to prepare for my interview.

thanks shakeandbake, congrats on ur acceptance, thanks for the extra advice and heads up..i just hope they won't keep drillling me with questions, but 25 minutes is not bad, thats 25 minutes of the rest of my life! what kind of questions did you ask them i'm wondering, or did you? ttyl, berns10

I asked them how accelerated students are viewed compared to traditional. They said that accelerated are definently preferred.

I was hoping there would be more people here by now who got in. so how are you guys handling the summer? How was the wedding, wannabeanurse? are you working now? did you have to move or were you both in the same area? a year seems so longggggg to starting!!!. have been in contact with Kristina a few times just touching base. does any of you guys work in a hospital and how do you like it?

I do homecare and so far have enjoyed it, the pay is not so good but it pays the bills.

lets talk financing the program, how are you guys planning on doing that? anyone else planning on taking out a loan?

keep in touch.

You should join Facebook, we have more people on there. I think we have 10 members so far for our May 2011 class. You can put a post on financing on there and it's all private cuz it's a closed group. Request to join and I'll accept you.

Hey,

I was wondering about how long it took for you to be contacted for an interview after you applied. I just applied for the fall 2010 start. I guess it sounds like it might be a while if they are still doing interview for the may 2010 start.

thanks for any help!

Hey, I started applying in January. It was something like 2 weeks later got into the school, 2 weeks after that received nursing plan of study, Then I mailed off my application, then 2 or 3 weeks later got contacted for an interview (at this time it was April) then 5 or so days after the interview they sent an email that I was in. I think they do interviews towards the end of what would be a semester. Hope that helps!!!!

BTW, I'm not going to OU, I was just admitted into EMU's accelerated program that starts this Fall!!! So glad I don't have to wait another year. I'm still waiting on Wayne State (my interview went well with them). I'm also wait listed at UM so I'm still hoping they will pull through. But no matter what, I'm starting this Fall!!!!!!! :)
