Hi! I was wondering if anybody out there has interviewed for Oakland University's ABSN program for the FAll of 2011 cohort. I think it will be 3 to 4 weeks before we find out if we will get accepted or not. I wish everyone good luck and hopefully receive good news!
Congratulations everyone! I was accepted into the Fall 2011 cohort as well! I just created a facebook page for us to start to get to know one another. :) Please search for it and join!
bronzemint23, I am curious, how did you get accepted to May 2011? Had you applied previously? Do you have all your prereqs complete. I checked May 2011 on my application. I won't finish my prereqs until this April, but I would love to start right up in May! Does anyone know the chances of being bumped up, or how they do this? I am just happy to be accepted, but what a cherry on top to start early.
Hi Prettygirl,
The clinical assignments are not at Riverview but at a hospital. Only classes and labs are at Riverview - which is very impressive. Clinicals: the college will determine the location and there is no switching allowed from what they told us. They said it gets too complicated. As I mentioned, they send you wherever they find a spot and it could be as far as Brighton, etc. My guess is anywhere within 50 miles is likely. But I am sure most of the clinical locations will be concentrated in the Detroit area. Possibly they do look at where a person lives but they don't tell you that - behind the scenes though it behooves them to keep people closer to home since clinical rotations can be 12 hour shifts.
Regarding profs, I think i mentioned earlier my preferences. I agree with evansmom. I would take them online if you are a good student who is disciplined. I say this because you can't slack off because it's online - theres a ton of reading and papers to write. But you can do very well if you are on top of things. If you get behind, you are not going to catch up. Good luck and congrats to all who were accepted!!
If I can offer one more bit of advice: I would highly recommend you take Pharm in the last semester before you start the program. I say this only because the information will be fresh. If you take it too early, I think you will find that you will not remember many of the concepts(which are overwhelming, trust me) - I have heard this from others who started the program. I would tend to agree. I would recommend taking patho first, then take Pharm and nutrition together(there's some overlap in the courses). This is just my opinion and I hope it helps some of you out. Patho is a pretty tough course and taking it with Pharm you will find one or the other will suffer(you will not learn as much as you wneed).
I'm not sure how they "bump" people up. I would like to find that out too. I am taking nutrition in Winter 2011 and then I am done with the pre-reqs. I wonder if they keep a running list of people who are interested? Hmmmm. I wonder if we call and ask, if they would tell us. I also want to move up, but am looking forward to taking the summer off before everything starts. I am like CookiMonster - I am just so glad to be accepted that I don't care when I start.
I also requested to join the facebook group. :) I hope we all get to know each other really well and have a study group all built in before we even get started.
Hi evansmom, I didn't see your request to join the group on facebook... hmm. The title is "Oakland University Accelerated Second Degree Nursing - Fall 2011 Cohort". I did search to make sure one didn't already exist, but maybe I missed one!
I think I will call or email to see how they move people up and see if they are taking requests. Either way is good though, the summer off will be nice. I am just so ready to start a career!
Hi, The best thing to do is to let them know you want to move up. Then you wait and they may call you. For example, a number of people were moved up to my cohort. I think they typically will move up 4 or 5 people. I believe its based on gpa. The best thing to do is to get your online courses completed and do really well in them. When completed, email the adviser and let them know you want to move up. It can't hurt. But it's only a few months difference so you want to make sure you are mentally ready to start the program.

I am in the program starting in a month. All the classes are at Riverview. The clinicals are wherever they place you. There is no choice and no switching - you could drive to Brighton if that's where they place you. Regarding profs, I agree with Evans mom on the prof for Pharm. Be prepared to write a lot but the class is very manageable and she prepares you very well for nursing school(one of the best profs I have ever had) My nutrition teacher was great too so send me PM if you need the name(think dessert). Patho - take the prof which rhymes with can. Good luck. If you can, take Pharm with a light load (with only one class like Nutrition) - if you want to do well.
