Oakland University Accelerated BSN fall 2011 Cohort

Published

Hi! I was wondering if anybody out there has interviewed for Oakland University's ABSN program for the FAll of 2011 cohort. I think it will be 3 to 4 weeks before we find out if we will get accepted or not. I wish everyone good luck and hopefully receive good news!

I don't think that OU does, but I'm not positive. I think they just consider the pre-requisites. Other schools do, like University of Detroit Mercy.

Well I was told at the end of my second interview with OU that Undergrad GPA is a big factor in determining your acceptance into the program (15 points on a rigid point scale).... which was news to me since the advisor straight up told me in my orientation over a year ago that Undergrad GPA has nothing to do with acceptance, and that only your 5 core classes from Section A matter.

I can even give them the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe the policy changed, however I was never notified even though I'm on their nursing students email list!!

Was anyone else told the same???? if so we are all misinformed!!! This is very unprofessional and I pretty much based my whole pre-req game plan on the notion that my undergrad GPA wouldn't count!!:banghead:

Hmmmm. I was under the impression that it didn't play a large role in their decision. I mean I figured they would consider it, but would put a bigger emphasis on pre-req GPA and your interview. I could totally be wrong though. How was your interview this time bronzemint? Was this past interview session your second interview?

Hi All,

I had my interiew last week with one person and it went much better this time.

Your undergraduage GPA does matter according to the person I interviewed with, in fact she brought it up that I had a 2.9 GPA in my undergrade degree. I told her that my 2.9 was from U of M Business School which is a selective program and that they curve the grades(a forced curve where someone has to get a E,D,C,B, A) and that I completed the program one semester early and worked part-time. I shared with her I was uncomfortable having to defend my undergrade grades and that you need to look at the school the person went to and other factors and successes you've had after your undergraduate degree. She agreed and said that the longer it has been since your degree the less importance the actual grades should be. She also said she does not make the final decison and that she would recommend me. I'm already looking in the mail every day hoping to get a response.

I have applied to UofDMercy but need to take several more classes for them.

I even applied to Oklahoma City U. and was accepted for Jan 2011 but I did only as a backup and really cannot afford the tuition/living expenses to do it.

It's about $70K for their 16 month program. I found them through researching what accel. programs accept most students. They are able to do so because of their high tuition costs that prevent most students from being able to do the program. I was told Schoolcraft's waitlist is now 5 years.

Good luck everyone and I'll post as soon as I hear anything.

Thanks nnarod. Your explanation was very helpful. Can I ask how long ago you graduated? I'm just curious how long ago they think is a long time.

Hi! I looked into Madonna University and even meet with an advisor there and I was actually ready to start this fall, but I decided not because of the cost. I didn't realize how much tuition really was, so I opted not to go there. I know someone who got their BSN from Madonna and liked their program. I will probably just continue on with occupational therapy if OU doesn't work out. I just don't want to get my hopes up, so we will wait and see what hapens!

Hi Evansmom,

My interview was like 10 minutes long too.

As far as undergraduate GPA, it didn't get brought up in my interview. The interviewer just mentioned what I wrote in my goal statement. My undergraduate degree was from OU and it was from 12 years ago.

I would think that they would want students who went to their school previously. Hmmm....I got my bachelors 6 years ago, so I wonder how heavy they are weighing my GPA. I just want the wait to be over. ;)

Hi Evansmom,

They didn't really tell us how their point system works. A friend of mine got accepted a while ago, but ended up getting into EMU's accelerated program and decided to go there instead. It was closer to her house. Any way, her undergraduate degree I think was from U of M, but her GPA wasn't that great. Her pre-requisite OU GPA was decent, but not a 4.0 and she got accepted into their program. She said her interview went great, so maybe that made a difference. Plus her undergraduate GPA was more recent, within a couple of years. Maybe OU does take a holistic approach in deciding who gets accepted or not. I am trying not to think about it so I don't get my hopes up.

I am also trying not to think about it. I nearly lost my mind last time around waiting for an answer. I am working a temporary job for the month of November so I am hoping that will help me not to think about it. I will be SO disappointed if I don't get in again. I will have to figure out what to do next if it doesn't work out and I have no idea what that will be.

Has anyone heard yet? I remember in July some people got notified by email first before even receiving official letters...

I've not heard anything. I think the email thing was just a rumor though. The people that I know who got in during the July interviews only received letters by snail mail. It is just that they received letters before anyone else received any other communication (like rejection letters).

I think they do it by mail as well now. I wonder if we will hear anything by Thanksgiving week. I wonder if all the acceptance letters are just one sheet of paper like the rejection letters.
