Published

Hello!! i'm currently getting ready to sit the NZ Nursing COuncil state exams to be a registered nurse in three weeks...i'm just wondering if anyone can help give me a few tips on how to study and prepare for state exams...the nursing school says 'study everything' but there is just sooooo much its overwhelming. is state really a difficult exam?!? because i'm so stressed about it its terrible...any...ANY advice at all would be so appreciated. thanks :-D

As I'm on the other side of the Tasman I'm not much help. But I wish you all the best, and hope to see 'RN' after your name soon...:nurse:

Hey.

I am also sitting state on Nov 20. Dont stress too much- talking to people who sat it last year it seems fairly straight forward. I know several people who only studied for 3 days and still passed.

Have you got a review book? I have a NCLEX review book which is really helpful for giving overviews of what you need to know. Definately helps to identify areas that you need to study more!!

Hey Rach101

thanks so much for the reply...i know i heard the same thing too about States being so easy, some RNs even say that they didn't study and passed...what i'm stressing is omg imagine if i fail seeing as everyone is saying its going to be so easy!! lol!! :-p

but yeah i used the NCLEX and then i met a lecturer who said don't use it because its so overwhelming it'll do my head in... :-S lol!! but its great..sometimes haha. can't wait for the Nov 20th exam to be done and over with...two sections mmmm just wondering if theres a safety and drug calcs section on their own or is merged???

good luck with your exam!! and shall see you out in the hospitals :-D!!

im not sure about the safety and drug calc. i ASSUME that they will only be contained in one of the two exams. i think that is my biggest worry...what if you accidently get a question that you have to get right wrong. it would be so sad to fail because of one question!!

All the best!

heya...yeah that's what i'm stressing about...drug calcs!!! one little mistake and three years of study and stressful interviews down the drain..kind of. just hope they don't throw in some random disease that you just go 'what?!?'. really am hoping that its as easy as people say it is. i'm riding on that lol!! :-D

Good Luck to you for state.

Hey guys - I'm with you on this one! State now two days away :uhoh21: !

I have bought a couple of NCLEX books second hand from new-grad nurses I know. They said they are a lot more comprehensive than the State exam - and State is not amerian-ised like NCLEX.

I have used the CD that came with one of them a lot! it's like sitting a practice exam, and you get a review afterwards with rationales - why you got answers wrong / right.

Have you had job interviews for next year?

I have a new grad placement at Starship :nurse: as long as I pass this exam!!

eek. yeah i should be spending more time studying rather than on the internet! anything is distracting me right now.

i have got sick of nclex questions i have now started reviewing straight pathophys/anatomy. i figure if i know what normal is i can logically figure out abnormal. ie. kidney releases EPO stimulate RBC production therefore kidney disease could cause anaemia.

wow lisamaree i have new grad at starship too!!!!! in general paeds ward. where will you be. will prob meet you at the orientation days.

small world huh.

Hey!

Yes I'll be on 24-B (general surgery; paediatric) - a combo. of my two faveourite specialities! It'll be great to 'know' someone else before I start!

I live in hamilton so will be moving to auckland mid-Jan (gotta find a flat, central :uhoh21: ) A bit scary but yeah there will be the orientation days! And one of my good mates in the course has also got a new-grad placement there in PICU.

Good luck with studying and with State!! Sounds like you are totally onto it.

well that's state exam over!!! whoohoo!! :roll

There were a lot of mental health questions - fortunatley mostly the common-sense kind.

I loved all the emergency scenario questions on the second paper - I find them so easy, done countless first aid courses and now volunteer with st john

How did anyone else find the exam???

WOW its all over! definately time to celebrate and relax over the summer!!

i agree that the questions, particularly mental health were very straight forward. im wondering how much my study actually helped...i think i would have known most of it just from what i remembered (feel a bit like i wasted a week of sunny weather with my head in a text book!)

enjoy the summer guys. all the best with starting jobs etc!

hey guys! I can see the last message was posted in 2007. Now, new batch of student nurses will experience the anxiety that all of you are talking about. And by the way, how many MCQ please? and additional tips maybe? thanks you. :)
