Hey there,
I've recently been accepted to both NYU's accelerated BSN and a new program Hunter College is starting - also an accelerated BSN that starts in June. Obviously Hunter is much more affordable, but I wonder - is there a big difference in the actual programs? Where are the clinical sites for each? Are the facilities very different?
I'm getting so anxious about it - both seem like such a great opportunity, but I hesitate to be a guinea pig in Hunter's program since its new.
Any thoughts?

I don't know what to advise you, but I'm starting Hunter this fall for my prerequisites and was planing to apply to Hunter Nursing and NYU in the Spring. I wasn't aware there was a new program at Hunter. I didn't see any info on their site. Can you tell me more about it? Also, what were your stats when you got in? Gpa, etc...

Hunter has always had a stellar reputation for nursing.

Hi
I'm NYU alum of class 2007 and I love NYU nursing school. I spent a fortune for my nursing education but worth every single penny. Now that I'm ready for graduate school, I applied to Hunter for Fall 2009's semester. I applied before their deadline (4/1) and have yet to receive an answer from Hunter. Everytime I get in touch with admin ppl, they always give me the run around. I guess this is expected from CUNY. I agreed with a lot of ppl that Hunter is a great school and since my employer will only pay limit amount for school and I don't want to add more debt on top of my NYU debt and for that reason I decided to try Hunter. I feel like Hunter is already giving me a bad first impression from the start and imagine if I'm in the program. If I do get accepted, I really have to think hard if I want to go through with their program. If my employer will pay for 100% tuition, I would go to NYU in a heartbeat!
Just my 2 cents!!!
Thank you so much for your input. I've been taking all my pre-req's at Hunter this year, and administratively, the school is a disaster in my opinion. That's what scares me about doing the accelerated program with them - I'm afraid of being the first round guinea pig! They do have a decent reputation, but the facilities and instructors (at least with the pre-req's) have been lacking - many teachers have actually said to me that CUNY doesn't pay them enough to put more time in.
I think the nursing program is much different - and the professors care much more, but the lack of funding is certainly an issue.
Glad to hear you had such a wonderful experience at NYU - where did you do your clinicals? What were the facilities/classrooms/teachers like?
Again, thank you!
Lara,
Can you please tell me about the Hunter accelerated program? I'm starting my prereqs at Hunter in the Fall. I agree about the administration. So far, I haven't even started yet, but everything I've been dealing with, it's just so frustrating, it's like pulling teeth for information. They flat out refused to tell me if the Chemistry course I'm taking over the summer at another school will meet the requirement of their Chem course. I asked a similar question of NYU (which course to take at hunter for their Nutrition requirement) and they gave me the exact course number from the Hunter catalog. I guess that's the difference between the public and the private. Unfortunately cost is a huge factor for me, so if I can get accepted to Hunter Nursing, I will go. I just never heard of them having an accelerated program now.
Thanks
Hi Jlan,
The Hunter accelerated program has not begun yet - they are starting it this summer. I got my email acceptance to the generic pathway, and then another email the same night from the dean inviting me to this new program they are starting this summer for students who already have a degree in something else. It starts in June and runs for 14 months until next August. So instead of 4 traditional semesters, the coursework would be done in the following order: summer, fall, spring, summer.
It's a great option for those with a previous degree - I had no idea that this would be available when I applied and it has totally changed my game plan. I was kind of set on NYU because I'm eager to get the ball rolling, but now with this new program, Hunter's actually starts sooner, ends sooner and is much much more affordable.
The A & P courses at Hunter have been great - the teachers who run that course care so much and I've learned a great deal. The other chems and bios have left a lot to be desired - but that said, I'm sure any school has a tough time making those courses interesting. I just became really frustrated because as a second degree student, I had to schedule all of my courses after the regular students, and had a lot of trouble getting into these classes that have only a limited number of seats - and every time I called and emailed - they gave me the runaround or told me to wait until next year, and I was pulling my hair out!
I'm so torn about what to do - both programs have their positives and negatives, but I feel lucky to at least have a choice!

Thanks, that's definitely something to consider. Would you mind telling me what your GPA was? I'm wondering what my chances are of getting accepted.
I had a 3.97 at Hunter, but a 3.13 from Penn State - they combine all grades from all schools, plus you have to take the NLN. So 50% is the NLN score, and 50% your combined GPA.

i'm a couple months late to this post, and i'd love to know what you ended up choosing! i had no idea hunter was starting an accelerated program. i'm at hunter right now finishing prereqs and i have a BA from nyu, so this new path would be perfect for me. i hope it's successful and that they continue to offer it so i can apply next year.
if you're in the accelerated program right now, how is it?
thanks and good luck with whatever you're doing!

Hi,
I know this is a really old post but I just got accepted to NYIT and NYU's accelerated nursing program and I went to the group interview for hunter's accelerated nursing yesterday and is still waiting to hear back from them. Now I am trying to consider which school to go to. Im considering NYU for the prestige and Hunter for the price (if i get in). Any advice would be great!!
Thank you.
