I'm starting clinicals in the spring of 2008 at NYU. Is anyone else applying to NYU or going to start clinicals in the spring? I'm taking the prereqs right now at nyu, so feel free to ask my any questions. You can PM me

Glad I found this thread! I applied to NYU for Spring 2008 and I am still waiting to hear. I called them on Friday and the admissions person said that they "haven't made a decision on my file yet" and that I should hear in roughly two weeks. At least I have finals studying to keep me busy while I wait!!

I am from the San Francisco Bay Area (live in Lafayette) and got my BA in Spanish. I will keep you all posted as to the decision. I hope to be joining you two in New York! We will see.

Hey everyone! I still haven't heard from NYU either. Congrats to all that got accepted =]

Haven't heard yet from them either but when I called in today, the admissions lady said they no longer check status and all letters should arrive within the next week. I guess since their deadline was November 15, December 15 is the absolute latest we would recieve a letter.

Btw, not to count my chickens before they hatch, but long how do you have to reply whether you would be attending or not? When is the first day of classes? What kinds of things do you need to get done before the first day? I saw shots, BCLS (?), etc. mentioned. The reason I ask is that I work full time and I don't want to give notice if I don't get in. But if I do have to give notice, I'd prefer to give a month. The decision is so late I don't know if that's possible anymore. It also makes me feel like I'm in a "maybe" pile somewhere, waiting for people to not attend so I can move up the list. :( Not a good feeling but if it gets me in, then so be it.

NYSBNHopeful, we were asked to respond within three weeks of the acceptance letter's date.

To register, you'll need a current BLS (basic life support) for Healthcare Providers, a recent history/physical, and blood tests to prove MMR, chicken pox, and tetorifice immunization. You'll need a polio test, too. Hepatitis B and meningitis vaccinations are optional, but not having the former might bar you from some clinical settings so is strongly encouraged.

Hi everyone,

I am interested in applying to NYU for spring 2009. I have called them a few times to try to get a feel for what makes their "perfect applicant" and have had difficulty getting any kind of solid response. For those of you who got accepted, is there any way you could post a little bit about yourselves as an applicant (GPA, prereq GPA, previous work experience, prior school attended) so I can get more of a feel for what they are looking for? It would be VERY much appreciated!

For a bit about myself, I graduated undergrad from University of Michigan with a double major in Political Science and Psychology two years ago. I have a 3.1 undergrad, but haven't taken many of the prereqs, which I plan on doing over the next year. I also plan on volunteering part time at a local hospital so I can get some experience. Any other suggestions you could give me would be great!

I believe that NYU will provide a BLS for Healthcare Providers class when we get there so I don't think you have to worry about getting that done before we go. There's a place to check off whether we already have the BLS or if we want to do it at NYU.

I'm not quite sure what they're looking for, but I would think that it's really important to have as many of the key prerequisites in the bag when you apply (especially anatomy, physio) when you have a social science background so that they know you are academically strong in the sciences as well. You have a good GPA so I think working on your prereqs will help a lot. When I applied, I still had chem, dev psy, and microbio in progress, so I wouldn't say you need all of them done but the majority would be good to have done. I would think that a lot of accelerated nursing applicants have liberal arts backgrounds so you should prove that you can keep up that gpa in the sciences.

Patient care or hospital experience would be another way to differentiate yourself. Volunteering at a hospital will give you great insight into the field and allow you to write a more meaningful essay.

A little about myself.. double Interdisciplinary and English undergrad majors from Berkeley with a 3.8gpa, did some volunteer work at a hospital while an undergrad, Returned Peace Corps education volunteer, have been working in the health care field as an anesthesia tech for a little over half a year, and am finished with my prereqs (finally ) this term.

Getting those prereqs finished was quite the chore. I took nutrition and stats as an undergrad but I took the rest of my prereqs when and where I could when I got back from the Peace Corps at SF State, Berkeley extension, LSU online, University of Phoenix online. As you can see, this is going to make for a lot of transcript requests. If you need to get dev psy done, LSU has a self-paced class that's not bad and if you need stuff done really fast UOP has an easy 5 week micro and other classes (for a price).

Good luck with your prereqs and apps next year. It's tough but just keep at it and you'll be just fine. :balloons:

There is a class at NYU in early January. It's from 9AM to 3PM or so but they will let you out at about 1. You don't really learn anything and there's no test. I took it there. So don't fret. :)

Honestly, I think all NYU really cares about is your gpa. At this point it isn't really competitive enough to look at your extracurriculars that much. As long as you surpass everyone else with your gpa, you'll get in. Even during the seminars I had at NYU, they keep bragging about how their GPA and test scores are going up, etc. NYU is really corporate...

As for prereqs or not, I think they would prefer you not to have them, so you would have to take them at NYU and pay them another semester's tuition. It's about luck too, because they can have an opening for prereq classes OR they could have one for 15 month starting.

And I guess I will see you in class next term, suzie hull? :)

Well, if you're gpa is "high" then you'll get in, I think. If it's rather low, things are bleak. As for shots and BCLS. NYU has a bcls course taht you can take if you get in. Shots are due Dec 15th officially but I"m sure you can hand them in later. Don't panic.

Thank you all for the advice and help. I will definitely be working hard on the prerequisites. Although I am sure that NYU would like me to take another semester there, I don't think my pockets can really afford it! So I will be trying to complete the prereqs in advance. I think I will also do some extracurricular volunteering, if only to prove to myself that this is the right field for me.
