NYU 15 Month Accelerated BSN - Please share your experience

Published

Hello,

I am very much leaning towards attending the NYU second degree program over LIU in the fall and would like some insight as to what to expect. Please include any details you would like to share.

What are typical class hours during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters?

Is it 5 days a week, pretty much all day?

Were you able to do an externship?

How many students per class? Clinicals?

Is/was getting through the 15 months harder/easier than expected?

What were the easiest classes, if any? Any classes that we particularly challenging, difficult or confusing?

Any additional suggestions/details would be great.

Thanks again!!

I was wondering about the nursing shoes myself. I have read on the boards that people wear Nike Shox, New Balance, Dansko, Sketchers, Z-Coils, Nursemates etc. Is it okay to wear sneakers as long as they are enclosed in the front and all white? What are some popular brands/styles that students have found to be good? I also read about support stockings? Are those helpful during clinicals? Is there anything else aside from the purple top and bottoms and white shoes we should consider purchasing?

Also, I signed up for classes, but there is some Intro Class that is not assigned any credits that we have to take. Do we need to register for that as well or is it automatically scheduled for us?

Thanks again!

I believe the Intro class is the New Orientation seminar we have to go to in July. The two day one.

I don't know anything about an intro class. I definitely didn't have to take one. If you're talking about an actual class that you sign up for, I think that it could possibly be something that brand new freshman have to take, but not second degree students. You could definitely ask at the orientation in July though.

did any of your professors allow you to record their lectures w. digital voice recorders? what was the best way you/other nyu students found to be the best way to take notes. im considering getting a netbook/laptop to bring to class, but they don't seem very useful when it comes to clinicals.

I've seen people record lectures and I don't think it's a problem, although I would get permission from the professor first. Many people bring their computers in as well. Most of the professors lecture from Powerpoints which they typically post on a website before the lecture. So usually you can download and print out the powerpoint and take notes on that, which is what I do. NYU has several printing labs where you can print for free, so you can take advantage of that. You don't need to take notes or bring your computer to clinical and you don't really need to bring any lecture notes that you may have taken with you either.

hi all,

i am too a nyu hopeful. i am applying in october for the january 2010 Accelerated BSN program. i'm wondering what the gpa requirements are or suggested grades one should receive in the prereq? i'm kind of worried because i got a b- in a&p 1 and i took a&p 2 this summer and got a c. should i take it over or just continue on to micro and nutrition and focus on doing well in those two? i'm so stressed about that last grade.

hey chandra:

for your pre-reqs before you enter the program, you should have a c or above on all. i would not worry too much about your a&p grade for the second portion. a "c" in that course is not bad at all. it is a difficult course to conquer . therefore, focus on your other two remaining pre-reqs. try to attain a grade of >b in microbio. there is no gpa "cut-off" according to my knowledge. i had a 3.4 gpa for my b.s degree.. they look @ your overall work and how well-rounded you are and what you will bring to the table if you were to be a part of the nyu community. don't stress yourself out too much over it, :nono:your grades are not their only focus when determining acceptance! save your stress for when you're actually in the nursing program lol :)

all the best of luck! :wink2:

Thanks Mehr, I'm hoping with my background (over 10 years in the health field as an RMA and Phlebotomist, BA and an MA is Sociology and currently working as a research coordiantor at Mount Sinai) I will have a good chance. You have really lifted my spirits though. Are you attending NYU?

Hey Chandra:

Yes, I was recently accepted. I think your experience and advanced degree will help you. So don't fret! :D

Books are about 500 per semester... and that's a very rough estimate. I bought most of my books new because the bookstore has a deal with the publishing company that makes the books, and when you buy them new in the bundle package, you also get free online and computer editions of the books.

Kelzy, on the NYU bookstore's site, after I plug in my ID, it doesn't offer the bundle, just individual books. Should we just stop into the bookstore and request a bundle? Thanks!

If the bundle is something you're interested in then yes, I think you should at least call and see if they have them. If it's not then you can buy the books anywhere and you can probably even get them used to save money

Hello,

I was wondering what you mean by a "bundle". Are they discounted?

I am in the 15 month accelerated program starting this fall and I started buying my books on Amazon. Even new, they are cheaper than the bookstore and have free shipping.

Just spoke to the bookstore and there is no more bundle. They must be purchased individually.
