NYU 15 Month Accelerated BSN - Please share your experience

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hello,

I am very much leaning towards attending the NYU second degree program over LIU in the fall and would like some insight as to what to expect. Please include any details you would like to share.

What are typical class hours during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters?

Is it 5 days a week, pretty much all day?

Were you able to do an externship?

How many students per class? Clinicals?

Is/was getting through the 15 months harder/easier than expected?

What were the easiest classes, if any? Any classes that we particularly challenging, difficult or confusing?

Any additional suggestions/details would be great.

Thanks again!!

Does anyone know the # of graduates out of how many start out in the class at NYU?

Thanks in advance. All wonderful advice here.

In my class, there are about 150 accelerated students. I think there are about 200 in the class behind us. I have no idea how many end up graduating. As far as I know there haven't been many people who have dropped out. A few people have had to retake a class and are now a semester behind, but are still in the program.

Does it bother you that you have a ton of loans? I know you mentioned from a previous post that you wanted to go to nyu b/c of the experience...does your schedule give you enough time to enjoy the experience and still be sane with school material...or are you just talented at time management?

I'm just trying to work some kinks out in my head.

It doesn't bother me that I have a ton of loans because I know that I'll pay them off eventually. I think it would be bothersome if I felt like I wasn't going to get hired somewhere, but I don't feel that way at all, so I'm not too worried.

I'm actaully pretty awful at time management... wait, that's not totally true. I can time manage, I just choose not to :) Personally, I have had time to do the things that I've wanted to do in NY, my only complaint is that I don't really have the money for it. I'm lucky because I played sports at my first undergrad and that was just like having a full time job, so I'm used to being really busy and overwhelmed, and honestly I feel like this program is easier to handle. Not because the subject matter is easier, but because I don't have to play a sport so I actually have time to do things.

I do study when I need to, but I would say that I spend less time studying than a lot of people do so my time management is a little different than most people. I'm not suggesting that you don't study because everyone is different, but I think I stress out a lot less than most people in the program, so I don't worry about exams as much. And now I'm realizing how snotty I sound, but instead of me erasing this whole post, just know that you will be able to find the time to do the things that you want to do. The program is difficult, but it's not anywhere near impossible.

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks Kelzy, since we're only going to b in NYU for a short time, I wanted to join an arts/entertainment/creative type club. So I hope I can do that with this program.

Hi all. I'll be starting the 15-month progression program in Fall 2010, but I've already been at NYU completing the pre reqs and doing some nursing courses (an elective and theory and research). I've already spent $31,000 in one year: just on tuition!! Books was about another $1,000 and I live in Brooklyn, which is $1,000 a month in rent. I did work part-time during the year, but the College of Nursing advises you NOT to work AT ALL during the 15-month progression program. So, to pay for school I have taken out subsidized and unsubisized stafford loans and private loans.

What bank are you getting your private loans from and whats their interest rate? Any bank you would recommend?

Hi,

I am starting at NYU in September, doing pre-reqs and then starting the 15-month program in the Spring. Does anyone have any experience with work-study? How easy is it to get a job? I am planning to do this in the fall, since my class load won't be that high.

Thanks

I use Bank of America for my private loans. Oh, and NYU does offer many scholarships, it's only a matter of applying for them in such a freakin' LARGE pool that you are lucky to receive a meager few thousands... but I guess at this point any drop in the bucket helps.

Work study, I hear is pretty hard once you're in the 15-month progression program because you barely have ANY free time to work on campus, if anywhere at all. Most people work once a week or do some sort of evening job because some days you aren't done with classes until 6pm.

No. All white nursing shoes (ie clogs... Nursemates is a decent brand) or all white tennis shoes only. I don't know how safe Crocs are anyway.. there's not a lot of protection going on there :)

I was wondering about the nursing shoes myself. I have read on the boards that people wear Nike Shox, New Balance, Dansko, Sketchers, Z-Coils, Nursemates etc. Is it okay to wear sneakers as long as they are enclosed in the front and all white? What are some popular brands/styles that students have found to be good? I also read about support stockings? Are those helpful during clinicals? Is there anything else aside from the purple top and bottoms and white shoes we should consider purchasing?

Also, I signed up for classes, but there is some Intro Class that is not assigned any credits that we have to take. Do we need to register for that as well or is it automatically scheduled for us?

Thanks again!
