So just recently I heard that students who does not have a ssn or permanent residency in the state of NY won't be able to sit down for the NCLEX? bad enough they won't release your license until you have obtained a SSN ... I just want to know is this true? Granted it did come from faculty but I havent been able to find any updates anywhere or articles
Im concerned!
so is there a way I can get a hospital to release my license after taking the exam?? bc I know there are hospitals petitioning nurses etc.
I don't know what you mean - the hospital has nothing to do with your license. If you get a working visa or green card, you can get a SSN and the NYBON will release the license to you.
Does not matter if you live in NY, the issue is that you do not have a SSN# per what you were posting; so that tells me that you do not have a visa that will permit you to work.
Even if you are in the US under the H-4 visa, that will not permit you to work, and there are no visas available.
Other issue is that immigration and licensure are two very different things, even if one possesses a SSN#, that is not proof that one can work in the US and it states so right across the Social Security card. And this is where you are going to have trouble.
This is something new if NY is no longer issuing a license without a SSN#, they have always done so in the past. And this is the first that I am hearing of it, but have to say that I am glad about this because there have been nurses that have gotten licensed that have been working illegally there without proper documentation.
And just to clear things up for you:
There is no state in the US that will not permit a foreign nurse to test, none of them have SSN#s, the major issue is that the majority of the states will no longer issue an actual license until the SSN# is presented to them. And most definitely, CA will permit one to test, they just will not issue a license without the SSN#, and this has been in effect for years, it is not anything new.
Please take the time to do some reading on this site, much info that you need to be aware of.
