NY Nurses - drawing blood?

Published

Hi Everybody:

Can anyone tell me what the regulations are about drawing blood? I'm up for a job where they need more people who can do this. Anyone know if you need a special certification, or not?

Thanks,

I feel like I'm missing something... is this an RN job in a hospital? I draw blood on my patients every day. Some places have lab staff that do all bloods.

Just routine venipunctures? I'm used to that being considered a basic, routine competency that any RN is expected to be able to do (I do it all the time in my current job). But, of course, rules & regs vary from state to state, so maybe things are different in NY.

I am a certified phlebotomist, however, this cert was earned well before I became a nurse. To my knowledge, a nurse does not have to be certified, but a phlebotomist who works in a lab must be.

In the facility I work in, the lab is responsible for venipuncture, unless the patient has a PICC, then the nurse is able to draw off that. However, when I was in an accident, and had to go to another hospital, the nurses drew my blood. This is in NYS. I think it may depend on the facility. How this helps.

I am from New York State and the hospital I work in has the RN's and LPN's draw blood. You have to pass a competency on that before doing it. Hope that helps!

Thanks everybody - I did my clinicals in Massachusetts where all the blood drawing and IVs were done by a special team. Makes no sense to me since there would be times when somebody needs a procedure right away.
