Members here will most usually help you above & beyond. When you ask a question, we'd like for you to tell us what YOU think or where you're having your problem. That way we can focus with you. We usually get upset when some students just post and expect their homework answers without putting any of their own effort or thought into their assignment.

Good luck with your studies and welcome to AN.

ok i see. thank you for the guidance. one of my question i have trouble answering is: if an obese patient wants to lose weight, as a nurse what should we do first? should we set a weight lost goal, or guide the patient to a dietician?, or should we discuss the patient behavior modification and last should we identify the patient motivation?

I discussed with my study buddy and he said first to set weight lost goal while i think that its the referral to the dietician. any suggestions??

One of those 4 things definitely can/should be done first, and I think that considering the Nursing Process will help you to identify the right answer.

Hint: In my view, based on the Nursing Process neither one of you are right!

I'm just a student, but I feel like the most important part would be to determine patient motivation. If the patient isn't interested in losing weight, nothing else you do will matter.

You are correct - and it's much more than the idea of "motivation" in the emotional sense. "Motive" might be a better form of that word as far as this is concerned. Does she want to lose weight for a class reunion or because she is facing severe health effects of overweight? The whole POC will be different based on the answer.

Ah that makes sense, thank you.

I'm agreeing with JKL33. This option focuses on what the pt wants - it's pt focused. Not a dietician's 'on paper goal'. Motive/motivation might be classified as 'a cue to action' accdg to the Becker Health Belief Model theory.

Accdg to Becker, it's the 'something, something' that induces the client to undertake a health-related action.

Behavior mod is just a means to an end.
