There are no specific colors assigned according to position. You have to just watch the show and get to know the characters and what their roles are. I haven't watched it in years, but my recollection is that it is primarily about interns rotating through the ER, so the vast majority of the characters profiled are MDs.

I don't recall seeing any male RNs on that show. The males on that show either appear to be unit coordinators or doctors.

But male RNs wear the same thing as female RNs - scrubs. The colors generally represent their personal preference. :)

The male nurses on ER do wear the same types of scrubs that the females do. I haven't watched ER for the last 2 seasons, but as I recall, the male nurses were in the same peach colored uniforms as the female nurses. Now, I'm not a male but I can definitely say that that was not a good look for them and administration should have definitely re-examined that decision

I haven't watched the show since shortly after I started nursing school :chuckle , but those pinky-peachy uniforms were an issue in an earlier season. Carol Hathaway was still on the show then. In that storyline, the hospital's mgmt. was insisting on new, standardized uniforms (at least in the ER - they never really made it clear whether or not it was hospital-wide). Carol's committee of nurses chose one option, but mgmt. decided on the pink-peach uniform. Unhappy nurses all around.

And I don't know if his character is still there, but there was at least one male RN that I can recall - I don't remember his name, but the actor was Asian-American. Anybody remember him? The character was a nice guy.

To answer the OP's question ... The vast majority of nurses - men and women - wear scrubs. Check out any scrub catalog - plenty of unisex scrubs out there. Hospitals vary widely on policies of staff attire. Some leave it entirely up to staff, some color code departments (radiology in blue, CCU in green, etc.), some dictate certain colors or color combinations, and some might prohibit certain colors or prints. I know of one hospital that prohibits black, because they say the traditional association of black with death or mourning can be upsetting to patients, particularly the elderly. Another local hospital prohibits scrub prints containing cows, because of sensitivity to Hindus.

HTH

most scrubs are unisex... it is the jackets that are a little different.

in our school the students must wear a particular uniform that is ordered... no variation. if your uniform wears out you buy another. females are given the option of wearing a skirt if they chose but from what i have heard many do not go that route. the tops have our school logo and name (as well as "student nurse") embroidiered on them. hopefully, i will find out more about the uniforms this fall! :yeah:

one of the hospitals has colors for different depts. the or wears a particular blue print that is supplied to them... l&d must wear either pink or blue :rotfl: and most depts are limited as to prints that are acceptable.

for the most part if a hospital does require a certain color they try to make it a neutral color so that either sex is comfortable in it. when i worked at an animal hospital we all wore scrubs and the guys either went with a blue or green while we all had our cute little patterns.
