Nursing..THE GOOD & BAD as Male

Nurses Men

Published

Ok I am a 24 yr old male thinking about nursing. I work in the IT field and hate it. The nite shift is the main turn off . I cant tolerate a night shift position whatsoever.

Im thinking about going for an RN either ADN or BSN. I want to get into education and teach eventually

Well as a male could any of you guys tell me the good and bad of nursing as a male. I woudl like the 'raw' honest opinions.

Nursing would pay more money than I make now. IT Jobs are soooo scarce and I want something thats more people oriented.

So Im either thinkign about education or nursing

Thanks

Thanks for the flowers on this rainy and cold and gray day.

LOL, it is a clear blue sky [Hi; 69" Low; 44'] from my window viewpoint here south of Austin, TX. In fact, looking foward to the drive in my Vette to Golds Gym after 1500 [when I'm off call] in a couple of hours. However, I'd bet your No. Cali weather is very similar to FT Lewis, WA [south of Seattle] weather. So, since my wife & I will be moving up there in April I'd better not razz ya about your gloomy weather. :lol2:

BTW, I'll be switching over from USAR to AD [Madigan Army Medical Center] in the Army Nurse Corps [ANC] where very little female - male nurse animosity exist compared to civilian nursing. ;) In the ANC 33% of RNs are males, whereas in the civilian RN community males are only about 6-7% of the RN population. Nonetheless, please don't be mislead... I love working with my sister RNs.

It was great and funny to read this thread..coming from construction, which sounds like the other EXTREME where everything is blown off or an immediate fistfight ensues, this ought to be pretty damn interesting. I like keeping my mouth shut anyway, so I should be a natural. It was always interesting to see the crew behavior change when a female architect, etc. came on site, too. I start nursing school in 3 days....:uhoh3:

well guys dont get me wrong either. i was pointing out these things. that does not mean it happens all the time everywhere. and i think as long as your aware of it, its easy to deal with or avoid. the place i seen these thing happen the most was at ucla harbor, a county hospital in LA, where sorry, but bad nurse seem to stay and good nurses leave to private hospitals. where i am now things are great. just think its better to let a guy who wants to become a nurse know about it. as more guys enter this field, i believe these type things will be reduced in a big way.

ok that being said, what up with the flowers and all this mushy stuff. do i have revoke your dud memberships:smokin: J/K, sorry had to go there.

Good luck in nursing school! You won't regret your career move decision, either.

BTW, wise to keep mouth closed for majority of chit chat conversations w/female RNs... less likely to place foot in open mouth. :rotfl:

thatoneguy - Anytime you want to arm wrestle, have a push-up contest, or I'll even drag out my martial arts sparring equipment, you just let me know.

This USMC Vet and current ANC Soldier is very comfortable with giving out :flowersfo to my allnurse.com sisters.

Here if you feel left out have a  on me.

yeah now your talking, raise that testosterone level. i would love all that. i have a compition coming up in feb. in las vagas. its grappling, a lot of fun. cost is only 150 bucks to enter. i have been into it sense i was 5 years old.

o my bad on the flowers just noticed it was a girl you gave them too, lol thought is was a guy. oopppss. the steve thing through me off. but will take you up on the cold one if you come to vegas. you might even end up trying grappling. its around valentine's day. you could take your girl there and maybe join in. you can use arm bars and things but no breaking the bones, although this does happen, its not allowed and frowned upon if it does happen.

Outstanding to hear your into grappling competitions. Is your Las Vegas Tournanment one of those Ultimate Fighting Events? If so, your a bad mofo nurse, LOL. :bowingpur

I've considered taking up grappling, which is a very realistic combat art, especially compared to a lot of the other martial arts. The style I studied was Uechi-Ryu Karate Do; a close-in style, half hard, half soft style. I reached Brown/Blk Tip belt [one away from Blk belt]. D/T moving, divorce, etc. I never completed the journey to Blk belt after over four years of study in the martial arts discipline. I entered two tournaments & placed in my first. I would have gotten first place, except I broke my opponents nose w/spinning back fist, which is a :nono: in point tournanment fighting.

nice good job. you should go back and get the black belt, just so you can hang it up on the wall. maybe you just need to fight a black belt to get it. i also have a purple belt in kempo.

yeah its kinda like UFC but no cage. some competitions take downs and locks count as points, kinda like free style wrestling. but the one in LV is tap out and they dont seperate you like in UFC. you should try it. it goes good with other disciplines, just incase it goes to the ground. it also helps with nurseing believe it or not. like with a swinging pt. instead of blocking or grapping his wrist or something you grap this humerus just above the elbow, now you are in control of his arm. little stuff like that. and just practiceing is a big work out, great for endurance. i belong to the Gracie Academy and practice out of the dojo in Torrance, ca.
