Nursing..THE GOOD & BAD as Male

Published

Ok I am a 24 yr old male thinking about nursing. I work in the IT field and hate it. The nite shift is the main turn off . I cant tolerate a night shift position whatsoever.

Im thinking about going for an RN either ADN or BSN. I want to get into education and teach eventually

Well as a male could any of you guys tell me the good and bad of nursing as a male. I woudl like the 'raw' honest opinions.

Nursing would pay more money than I make now. IT Jobs are soooo scarce and I want something thats more people oriented.

So Im either thinkign about education or nursing

Thanks

***** also means a female dog but that doesn't mean it is acceptable.

And by the way, I am a male.

Not a male, but my husband was in the IT field for 20 years and is now taking prereqs at 45 for the same reasons. Jobs so scarce, layoff, needed something new and he is definitely a people person.

You may have to be willing to at least try nights, it's not the same as working the graveyard at 7-11 - you might find you like it. In some specialties or hospitals you may have a hard time starting out and staying in only day shifts. You might find you like nights. I was never a night person - I would probably sleep 10/11pm-7am if there were no clocks. But I love nights so much. That said, hospital nursing is a 24 hr business but there are plenty of 9-5 jobs: dr's office, LTC, outpatient surgeries, nurse clinics, teaching opportunities, administration, management, list goes on and on...

Okey dokey....just came home from work, popped on the board, opened a PM to me regarding this thread about our use of words and definitions thereof. OK kids, play nice. Post respectfully, please. We strayed quite a bit from the topic at hand as we dug into the dictionaries in order to attempt to undo any damage and ill feelings that may have been caused here. In that, can I say...let's move on. Thank you, mstigerlily, for pulling the topic back to the discussion. I wish I could be here on the board to put out flames and fires before they start....but like everyone else here, I have a life too and can't be here every moment. All I ask as a member and as a mod is that folks debate respectfully....believe it or not, it can be done. No use of derogatory terms, please. This is a male forum, I know. Guys have their own type of talk, I know this. But remember, we are not in the shop, in a locker room, or be bopping down the block. Keep it professional. Calling a guy a fairy is derogatory....come on, we know this. Let's not use it. For folks who have placed it in their posts....I simple ask that you please edit. It really has no place here.

I am the mod responsible for suggesting this forum in the first place. Admin was good enough to give it to us. Please, don't abuse that privilege. All in all, folks have done a fairly good job coming to terms in the end. Corvette guy, nice job. Thatoneguy and USIJurgy, shake hands and move on...and learn from his interaction. Let's not repeat it. I'm a pretty fair mod.

If a thread is beginning to go south/make a turn for the worse, PM me any time. When I come on board, I will address. If it can't wait that long, report it and another forum mod will address it.

PS I like a good debate like the next guy....but, we wasted an awful lot of good thread here over this. If one member is out of line, PM/report...I will address it with that member if need be and go from there. The last thing you want to do is to waste your energy on something I could handle any way. By giving it energy, you put fuel to the fire. Ignore it on the board, but report it or PM me to be handled.

Thanks, everyone.

Previous quote by Corvette Guy; USIJurgy is a young lady [22 yrs old] and looks like ya'll will have to both agree to disagree.

And by the way, I am a male.

My apologies for the mistaken gender identification. I did look at your Public Profile in an attempt to determine your gender. So, thanks for bringing my goof to my attention.

We RNs are a flexible, as well as forgiving bunch...

So, IMHO this thread can once again shine!

Last I read Male RNs make up 7% of total US RN pop., whereas Male RNs are about 33% of RNs in the Army Nurse Corps.

Do ya'll see the civilian Male RN #'s increasing in the near future?

yeah big time. nursing is going towards a more analytical thinking nurse. but then again with most hospitals trying to force or as they say give "guide lines" to get obtain a team aproach to pt care favors the female mind. i found this, by accident, read through it, its very interesting. give it a look.

It's been great as a man in nursing. You are a commodity amongst the women. THey all see you as neutral in their catty fights with the other female nurses. Patients seem to like it as well. The only thing I hate is the elder generation askking "so are you going to become a doctor?""" Enjoy it! Lots of opportunity. I love to talk to people. As most guys...I chose critical care as a specialty. I loke the gadgets as well (CVVH,Vents, balloon pumps...etc).
